2006 US Senate Campaign
Main articles: Washington United States Senate election, 2006
Guthrie campaigned in 2006 for the United States Senate seat held by Democratic incumbent Maria Cantwell. He was on the General Election ballot along with challengers Republican Mike McGavick, the Green Party's Aaron Dixon and independent candidate, Robin Adair. His platform included opposition to the Iraq war, opposition to portions of the USA PATRIOT Act, and defense of marriage equality.
On October 1, The Seattle Times reported that Guthrie would loan his campaign a substantial part of his life savings - nearly $1.2 million. [1] The loan was an attempt to meet the fundraising requirement for inclusion in KING-TV's debate among the candidates. Guthrie participated in the October 17, 2006, debate alongside Cantwell and McGavick. Dixon was barred entry.
