Mission
School Motto: Courage, Honor, Truth
School Proverb: With All Thy Getting, Get Understanding
Founded in 1902 by George E. Carmichael, Brunswick School is a college preparatory day school serving 875 boys in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12. The purpose of the School is to help boys and young men without regard to background acquire the personal, intellectual and physical training that will best enable them to grow into responsible adults who can make significant and lasting contributions to society. Through a rich and rigorous college preparatory curriculum, the School strives for the fullest intellectual development of every young man. Academic programs instill in each student a desire to learn, challenge each boy to fulfill his own unique potential, foster critical thinking skills and develop the qualities of mind necessary to intellectual maturity and increased self-confidence.
Campuses
The school is made up of 3 different campuses. The suburban Upper School campus is located on Maher Avenue in Greenwich. The Upper School English annex and Pre-School building is located on North Maple Avenue, a short walk away from the Upper School. The bucolic Edwards Campus (named after the previous Headmaster, Duncan Edwards, III) is located about 10 miles from the downtown campus. Edwards Campus is made up of both the Middle School and Lower School buildings, as well as the Burke Fieldhouse (basketball, wrestling, tennis) and Sampson Fieldhouse (which houses the Dann Gym and Hartong Rink). A new turf field is the home to the varsity football and lacrosse teams.
Athletics
Brunswick fields 14 varsity sports teams throughout the school year and Upper School students are expected to sign up for one sport per season each. Sports include football, hockey, lacrosse, and basketball among others. Brunswick is a member of both the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council, and the New England Schools Sailing Association division of the Interscholastic Sailing Association.
Brunswick is a perennial football power. The Brunswick football team has dominated local league play since the early 1980's, and has gone on to championships at the New England regional prep level, defeating far larger schools on a regular basis. Bob Sampson, Brunswick's former Athletic Director and head football coach from over 20 years, is credited with the growth and longevity of Brunswick's football dynasty.
Brunswick also traditionally fields a strong lacross team. Lacrosse also competes at the regional level, playing against larger schools throughout New England and the Middle Atlantic region. Jeff Harris, like Sampson, has been the guiding light for the lacrosse program since the early 80's. Jeff retired from coaching last year, but is still a member of the Brunswick teaching and administrative faculty.
Coordination with Greenwich Academy
Brunswick's sister school is 'Greenwich Academy', which is located 5 minutes from Brunswick's Upper School campus. The two schools share classes with each other during Upper School.
