BUD MOLIN

'Henry David “Bud” Molin', A.C.E., (May 26, 1925 - May 21, 2007) worked in Hollywood for half a century, from 1953 to 1993. Most of his best known work is in the comedy genre, having edited classic shows such as ''I Love Lucy'', ''The Dick Van Dyke Show'', and ''I Spy''. He often worked with Dana Cahn.


Bud collaborated with writer-director Carl Reiner on some of the funniest, most innovative comedies of the 1970s and 80s. They run the gamut from the huge commercial success of ''Oh, God!'' and ''The Jerk'' to experimental pictures, such as ''Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid'' and ''Bert Rigby, You're a Fool''. Although best known for comedy, he also edited dramas as well, such as ''They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!'' and ''Halls of Anger'', both dealing with racial relations.


Bud Molin came into television editing as the three camera shoot was coming in to vogue. He had some limited experience with it when he was asked by Dana Cahn to join him on the ''I Love Lucy'' set as his assistant. This was live television and the work was quite demanding. He honed his skills for comedy and was asked to edit ''The Dick Van Dyke Show''. Timing was critical. He was present at writers meetings and at rehearsals for each show, so by the time each episode was shot he knew how to edit it.


As his career progressed, he branched out to directing a TV series ''Good Heavens'' and a film ''Up the Academy''. He also was a post-production executive for the TV series ''Barney Miller''. Since he had great timing, he worked often on comedies, especially with Steve Martin. Those films include ''All of Me'' (1984), ''The Man with Two Brains'' (1983), ''Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid'' (1982) and ''The Jerk'' (1979). He came out of retirement to edit the comedy ''Fatal Instinct'', a film by friend Carl Reiner.
