BURKE MOUNTAIN, BRITISH COLUMBIA

'Burke Mountain' is located in northeast Coquitlam, British Columbia, north of Port Coquitlam on the ridge system leading to Coquitlam Mountain. The mountain is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and winter snowmobile trips. Burke Mountain is not to be confused with Mount Burke, a low hill at the end of Cedar Drive in Coquitlam near Minnekehada Park[1].
Major access is via Coast Meridian Road. Rural development currently occupies the mountain base, however the City of Coquitlam plans to build 10,000 houses on the mountain near the end of Coast Meridian Road.
Most of the mountain is part of Pinecone Burke Provincial Park[2]. The Port Coquitlam & District Hunting & Fishing Club is located at the main entrance to the park.

History

Burke mountain was named for Edmund Burke by Captain George Henry Richards of the HMS Plumper while surveying Burrard Inlet in 1860 [3].
In the 1970s, the mountain was the site of a minor ski development, including a lodge at the top of the mountain, a rope tow, and a ski village lower on the mountain. The ski area was abandoned when a fire burned down the lodge. The current map of the area still shows a symbol for the ski area.
The mountain was placed in Pinecone Burke Provincial Park on the park's creation in 1996. The cabins still exist, and are leased from BC Parks since they are now on park land.
