BUXTON, GUYANA

'Buxton' is a village in the Demerara-Mahaica Region of Guyana, standing about midway between Georgetown and Enmore.
The village was built on land purchased by former slaves, and it remains mostly a Black Guyanese community.
Buxton is known for its fertile backlands, that are surronded by trenches. One of the main crops grown in the backlands is the Buxton Spice mango. This mango is fleshy and sweet like others, but is distinguished by its unique spicy taste.
Buxton is also notorious for its high crime rates. Most areas along the East Coast Public Highway are safe by day, but it is advised to use extreme caution by night. It is best to know know someone in the village before entering after dark. Police and soldiers patrol Buxton very often, in search of stolen fire-arms and other murder weapons.
