'California's 17th State Senate District' is one of 40 Senate Districts. It is currently represented by Republican Senator George Runner of Lancaster.
The 17th District takes in the Antelope Valley and most of the Victor Valley, as well as portions of the High Desert, Santa Clarita, the northern San Fernando Valley and the mountainous areas in northern Ventura County. The area is a mix of suburban and rural areas, rapidly growing as Los Angeles and the Inland Empire grow into the deserts. The district has significant African-American and Hispanic populations.
The 17th includes portions of three counties, but a handful of voters vote in a fourth--nine individuals were registered to vote in the district live in Kern County. However, most of the population lives in Los Angeles County, primarily in Lancaster, Palmdale, Santa Clarita, and Los Angeles. The Los Angeles city portion includes several neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley, including Chatsworth, Grenada Hills, Northridge, Sunland, Sun Valley, and Tujunga.
In San Bernardino County, the district takes in Apple Valley, Hesperia, and Victorville in the Victor Valley.
Lastly, the northern, sparsely inhabited portion of Ventura County is in the 17th, including the cities of Santa Maria, Fillmore, and Piru.
The 17th Senate District is a safe Republican. As of 2006, 35% of Registered Voters were registered Democrat while 44% were registered Republican. In 2004, Senator Runner received 60% of the vote.
In the 1990s, the 17th included most of the High Desert, including Inyo County and the desert parts of Kern and San Bernardino Counties. The 2001 redistricting removed the High Desert and added Santa Clarita and the San Fernando Valley portions.
