CALIFORNIA STATE ROUTE 54

'State Route 54' is a California State Highway in San Diego that connects Interstate 5 to the city of El Cajon. The first section was built in 1961, and the final section was completed in 1976.

Route 54 starts as a freeway from Interstate 5 at the mouth of the Sweetwater River, with the westbound side on the north bank of the river and the eastbound side on the south bank. The two join up at the intersection of Interstate 805 and continue for several miles. As the freeway turns north, it becomes Route 125 and Route 54 exits at ''Jamacha Boulevard,'' following this road until its end at ''Campo Road.''
Here, Route 54 shares a brief concurrency with Route 94, although this is not documented in the legal definition of either route. ''Jamacha Road'' begins after about a half mile (800 m) when Campo Rd. and Route 94 head southwards. Route 54 then stays on Jamacha Rd. for the remainder of its routing, ending at the city limits of El Cajon.
The state route had previously continued all the way to Interstate 8, but the portion within the city was relinquished in 2001. El Cajon and San Diego County officials have indicated that they are open to discussing the completion of Route 54 between Route 125 and Interstate 8, but most likely not until after 2030.
