CAMBRIDGEPORT
'Cambridgeport' is one of the neighborhoods of Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is bounded by Massachusetts Avenue, the Charles River, MIT, and Harvard. The commercial district is Central Square, which is also the the name of its subway/MBTA (locally called the T) stop, on the Red Line.
There are a number of excellent small restaurants in the neighborhood, and Central Square is known for having the best live music in the Boston area (well-known venues include TT the Bear's and the Middle East). Cambridgeport is two stops on the T from Boston's Public Gardens, and a short walk to the Back Bay or Kenmore Square neighborhoods of Boston.
Culturally, Cambridgeport is a mix of students, young professionals, and longtime residents. Well represented ethnic groups include Greeks, Portuguese, Haitians, and Indians. The students are mostly graduate students from neighboring MIT and Harvard. In recent years, the neighborhood, previously considered run-down and even dangerous, has been undergoing modest gentrification. Dana Park, on Magazine Street, and Magazine Beach, between Memorial Drive and the Charles, are gathering places for families and young people.
Cambridgeport is home also to University Park at MIT, a mixed-use urban renewal project. Formerly an area of dingy industrial buildings and vacant lots, this now comprises a mixture of office buildings, rental housing, and retail space. In addition, Cambridge's only Trader Joe's market is located in Cambridgeport, on Pleasant Street near Memorial Drive.
