'Camp Merritt' was a military base in Cresskill, in Bergen County, New Jersey, that was activated for use in World War I. It was from this camp that thousands of soldiers were deployed to Hoboken, New Jersey before being shipped off to Europe. Camp Merritt was decommissioned in November, 1919.[1] The camp contained 1,302 buildings over a 770 acre area.
A monument was erected to honor those soldiers that died due to the spread of the Spanish flu throughout the area. The 66 foot tall granite monument stands in the center of the Camp Merritt Memorial Circle at the intersection of Knickerbocker Road and Madison Avenue. Camp Merritt is commemorated today by the conversion and expansion of a popular soldiers' theatre on the site of the camp into the elementary school of the same name.
