CAPE BRETON SCREAMING EAGLES
The 'Cape Breton Screaming Eagles' are a junior ice hockey team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. They play at Centre 200 in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
History
1969-1997 (Pre-Cape Breton)
The franchise was granted to the 'Sorel Eperviers' (Black Hawks) for the 1969-70 season. They moved from Sorel to Verdun in 1977 to become the 'Verdun Eperviers'. In 1979 they played in both Sorel and Verdun before moving back to Sorel for the next season. In 1981 they moved to Granby to become the 'Granby Bisons', and in 1995 they changed their names to the 'Granby Prédateurs'. In 1996, the Prédateurs won the Memorial Cup. In 1997 they moved to Sydney to become the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Prior to the Eagles' arrival, Sydney played host to the AHL's Cape Breton Oilers from 1988 to 1996.
Early Years 1997-1999
The Screaming Eagles' very first captain was Daniel Payette under coach Dany Dubé. They won just 19 games in their first season and finished last in their division. The following season saw the Screaming Eagles land a new coach, Bruce Campbell, however poor success continued as the club won just 22 games this season and finished last in their division once again. This was Campbell's only season with the Screaming Eagles as Pascal Vincent would become the new head coach that following October.
The Vincent Era 1999-Present
Although the hiring of Vincent saw the Screaming Eagles finish with better results than the first two seasons, the success was still mediocre and the club remained one of the QMJHL's basement-dwellers. The Screaming Eagles attempted to strengthen their weak club by drafting Ilya Kovalchuk 10th overall in the 2000 CHL Entry Draft that following summer, however Kovalchuk declined to play. The club finally saw their best season in 2001-2002, when they reached the league's division final only to lose in 5 games to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The following season saw more poor results as the Screaming Eagles finished with 34 points less than the previous season. Unfortunately, on July 26th, 2003, former Screaming Eagles captain Trevor Ettinger committed suicide. Ettinger was only 23 at the time and was playing with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. Ettinger was a fan favourite, and fans were able to visit Centre 200 in the following days to pay their respects to him. The offseason leading into the 2003-2004 season saw the Screaming Eagles stack their lineup with many NHL prospects, most of which came from a deal with the Halifax Mooseheads. The Screaming Eagles finished first in their division this season and finished the season ranked 3rd in the entire CHL, but lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.
Unfortunately, several months later Screaming Eagles President Greg Lynch passed away. At the 2004 QMJHL Draft, the Screaming Eagles chose forward James Sheppard with the 1st overall pick. Sheppard helped the Screaming Eagles to two overachieving seasons in which they finished 3rd in their division each time. During the 2004-2005 season, the Screaming Eagles wore a shamrock patch on their jerseys with the letters "PGL" (President Greg Lynch) in memory of their late president. The new president would be Paul MacDonald.
The 2006-2007 season saw the Screaming Eagles try and make another run at the Memorial Cup. Sheppard was named team captain and, after a blockbuster trade that saw the Screaming Eagles land Luc Bourdon, led the team to another division final, this time losing in 7 games to the Val-d'Or Foreurs. The deep playoff run was an emotional one, with the Screaming Eagles claiming they had their own inspirational motto by the initials "F.H.T.V." Many speculated it meant "Flying High To Victory" or "Flying High To Vancouver" (where the Memorial Cup was being held), however to this day the team has refused to reveal its meaning to the public. The Screaming Eagles won the Luc Robitaille Trophy for the most goals scored during the regular season, and also finished the season ranked 10th in the CHL.
