'Carlton' is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, USA. The population was 810 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Carlton County6.
Minnesota Highway 210 and Minnesota Highway 45 are two of the main arterial routes in the community.
The Thomson Reservoir and Dam, and Jay Cooke State Park are nearby; and the Willard Munger Bicycle Trail runs through the city.

History


In 1870 the Northern Pacific Railroad decided to finish a stretch of track that would link Duluth to St. Paul. Temporary shacks were erected for the workmen at the place that was soon know as "Northern Pacific Junction". In 1881 this settlement was incorporated as "Carlton". It takes its name from State Senator Ruben Carlton.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.3 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (8.85%) is water.

Demographics


As of the census2 of 2000, there were 810 people, 306 households, and 179 families residing in the city. The population density was 151.8/km² (393.8/mi²). There were 325 housing units at an average density of 60.9/km² (158.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.19% White, 3.46% Native American, 0.12% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population.
There were 306 households out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% were non-families. 37.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city the population was spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 28.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,477, and the median income for a family was $44,792. Males had a median income of $32,614 versus $21,167 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,586. About 6.3% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.1% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.
