History

Willis Carrier, invented the modern air conditioning in 1902. The corporation succeeded in marketing its air conditioner to the residential market in the 1950's, creating a revolution in which formerly sparsely populated areas such as the American Southwest became home to sprawling suburbs. It is the largest air conditioning producer in the world. It has U.S. manufacturing facilities in Tyler, TX for residential package units and commercial condensing units and package units, Charlotte, NC for accessories, Indianapolis, IN for residential and commercial furnaces and air handlers, and Collierville, TN for residential condensing units and heat pumps. Carrier Corporation is also the manufacturer of Bryant, and Payne, Heating and Cooling Systems. The company is headquartered in Farmington, Connecticut and was acquired by United Technologies Corporation in July 1979.

Other Information

Carrier is a roughly $12 billion-a-year manufacturing company. In order to remain competitive, it aggressively seeks competitive labor costs. However, some of its human resources practices have been brought into question and it has top talent to defend its interests and extract maximum value from existing labor laws. The company is known to rarely give employees original hiring or contract documents. It instead provides photocopies.
Carrier purchased the naming rights to the Carrier Dome, the football and basketball arena at Syracuse University. Interestingly, despite being named for an air conditioner manufacturer, the Carrier Dome is ''not'' air conditioned.
The Carrier Corporation historically has been based in Syracuse, where Willis Carrier moved his facilities from New Jersey in the 1930's. During the late 20th century, when it was acquired by UTC, it was Central New York's largest manufacturer. In recent years Carrier has substantially downsized its presence in Syracuse with manufacturing work being sent to Asian locations and managerial employees located closer to UTC's Connecticut corporate headquarters. This has been a challenge for the Syracuse regional economy.
Carrier has several air conditioner models that are certified by Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).
