Casalecchio's name is derived from ''Casaliculum'' (collection of little houses), while "Reno" is derived from a Germanic word meaning "stream" or "river." The site has archaeological treasures dating from the Paleolithic and Villanovan eras; Etruscan remains have also been found. Its inhabitants are called ''casalecchiesi''.
The Battle of Casalecchio took place here on June 26, 1402.
