Biography
The band began with a revolving door of vocalists appearing on a handful of 7" releases that were later compiled together for the band's first long-form record for Hydra Head Records, ''Beyond Hypothermia''.
Two weeks before the band was to record their second full-length, their vocalist left the fold forcing guitarist Steven Brodsky to learn and perform vocals for the release. ''Until Your Heart Stops'', considered by many to be their most revered work, along with extensive touring, garnered the band much attention and anticipation from fans and critics for what was to come.
The group's early work on Hydra Head Records was more extreme and chaotic in the style of bands like Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan, but after a four-song EP titled ''Creative Eclipses'' the band began to show influence by a wider range of styles.
In 2000, the band released ''Jupiter'', an exercise in spacey sound-manipulations and progressive song structures. The band's more scathing vocals were almost non-existent in favor of a more melodic approach. ''Jupiter'' received a good deal of press. The band was featured in Spin Magazine's "Sound Advice" section, where their new sound was described as "emo-metal Radiohead." ''Jupiter'' also caught the attention of major labels, who began courting the band after its release. The band released a final six-song EP for Hydra Head entitled ''Tides of Tomorrow'', with an even further-expanded melodic approach, before moving on to RCA Records.
In 2003 the band released ''Antenna'', their debut for RCA, an album lush with a power-pop sensibility. ''Antenna'' had more success than previous albums and enabled the band to play the second stage on the 2003 Lollapalooza tour. Early fan favorites like "Halo of Flies" from ''Until Your Heart Stops'' would be requested of the band at almost every show to no avail as the band had abandoned their older metalcore material.
Although the albums before ''Jupiter'' had alluded to melodic yearnings within the group, the chronic sore throat of lead vocalist Stephen Brodsky clinched the band's decision to move forward with the group's present, more euphonious sound and abandon most of their metalcore roots. Most of Cave In's material at the time could be categorized as space rock, using themes centering around space. Examples of this are the songs ''Jupiter'' and ''New Moon'', album names ''Jupiter'' and ''Antenna'', and the band's singular brand of resonating ambient "spacey" guitar effects they incorporate into their songs, including the use of toy-laser-guns amplified through their guitar pickups during live shows.
Playing Lollapalooza and a subsequent European tour with Foo Fighters didn't garner the band much financial success and their label, confused on how to market the band, put little support behind ''Antenna''. The band eventually reached a deal with their label and cut ties with RCA Records'.
Cave In returned to their old label and released Perfect Pitch Black (Hydra Head Records), on September 13, 2005. ''Perfect Pitch Black'' was a quasi-return to Cave In's metalcore roots, integrating heavy metal-esque vocals and guitar progressions into their well-developed space/prog-rock influences.
John-Robert has since departed from Cave In and has been replaced by drummer Ben Koller, who will balance drumming duties in Cave In as well as his primary band, Converge.
As of November 2006, Cave In is officially on hiatus.
According to postings on Hydra Head Records website news, Adam McGrath is listed as ex-Cave In guitarist in his new band Clouds.
