My toon, not risking getting killed again by going into a three story cog building, shows what happens in the Nutty River district. Due to large amounts of cog invasions, it isn't a safe place for low level toons as the cogs can reach level 10 in Toontown Central! ![]() | Representative Barbara Marumoto on District 19 Representative Barbara Marumoto introduces District 19 to the viewers. Aloha, I am Representative Barbara Marumoto, your legislator in the Hawaii House of Representatives. I represent the 19th House District that runs from 6th Avenue in Kaimuki through Waialae Iki Ridge. The state facilities in the neighborhood are mostly educational institutions, but a central part of the district is H-1 Freeway and Kalanianaole Highway. These are state roads so, I report all potholes and overgrown or under-watered landscaping to the state Department of Transportation. That agency always responds to my calls, but never fast enough to suit me. The District consists of several residential neighborhoods, the oldest being Kaimuki. The ewa boundary is 6th Avenue and runs to around 20th Avenue. It is bounded on the mauka side by Waialae Avenue and the makai side by Alohea Avenue. Half of Kahala is in the 19th District, the part closest to Diamond Head. The single family homes are occupied by locals and kamaainas but interspersed with occasional mansions. However, it remains a quiet and attractive neighborhood. I also represent the posh East Diamond Head area as far as the Lighthouse. How many of you saw the US postage stamp featuring our historic Diamond Head Lighthouse? Several hundred families live in Waialae Nui Valley -- in high rises, townhouses and single family residences. Their proximity to Kahala Mall, Wilson School and the city playground make this friendly neighborhood a convenient place to live. Most Waialae Nui Ridge residents have spectacular views from their hilltop homes. They drive through Aina Koa Valley to get home. Many 442 WWII veterans were original buyers in the valley, and now they are joined by new senior residents at the Kahala Nui Retirement Community. On the kokohead end of the District we find Kalani Valley and Waialae Iki Ridge. Everyone knows where the Kalani High School is, but few know that the back of Kalani Valley is a quiet, beautiful neighborhood. Waialae Iki is a large subdivision with many fine homes.and good people. What all these diverse neighborhoods want from their state government is good public education. There are many outstanding and Blue Ribbon Schools in the area. For instance, on 8th Avenue we find Liholiho School. Recently, the students put on a fun performance of the opera, Barber of Seville. On Koko Head Avenue and Waialae Avenue stands Queen Lydia Lili'uokalani School, the oldest and proudest school in the district. A block away you will find the well-utilized and popular Kaimuki Public Library. The only public charter school in the district, Waialae Charter is located on 19th & Pahoa Avenue. The parents & community have guided the school for over two decades. Instead of a principal, Waialae is operated by a CEO. Wilson Elementary is found in Waialae Nui Valley. Many students with geographic exceptions attend this and other East Honolulu schools that are known for academic excellence. Next door to Wilson is the Honolulu District Offices of the Department of Education. Many years ago Waialae -Kahala had pig farms. After Bishop Estate built a subdivision here, parents agitated for a school. Kahala was the first in the area and is now known for quality public education. One of my grandsons attends this school. The most outstanding middle school in the state, Kaimuki Middle, stands on Kilauea Avenue at 18th Avenue. The school boasts a great library, a good music program and many other positive features. Last year the school adopted the wearing of uniforms. Uphill from Kaimuki Middle stands Kapiolani Community College, KCC, an excellent vocational and liberal arts institution of learning on a scenic and beautiful campus on the slopes of Diamond Head. Soon we will see the construction of the KCC Culinary Arts Center on the site of the old Army Cannon Club. It will be a world class culinary program. Diamond Head State Monument has 800,000 visitors a year. We've been able to obtain $4.4 M last year to widen trails, develop new trails, and prevent rockslides - inside and outside the crater. Next to KCC you will find Leahi Hospital, a long term care facility that also houses other state offices. Leahi is part of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. Next door on Kilauea Avenue side, you will see the Department of Health Diamond Health Mental Health Center that services the Honolulu side of Oahu. This is the warm and wonderful 19th House District and the institutions that make it a great place to live. |
![]() | Visit of Gori (Géorgie/Georgia) Gori is a city in eastern Georgia, which serves as the regional capital of Shida Kartli and the centre of the homonymous administrative district. As of 2002, it had a population of 49,500. Gori is well known for being the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. Gori is located 76 kilometers west of Georgia's capital Tbilisi, at the confluence of the rivers Mtkvari and Greater Liakhvi, 588 meters above sea level. The climate is transitional from moderately warm steppe to moderately humid. Summer is usually hot. The average annual temperature is 10.9°C, minimal in January (-1.2°C) and maximal in August (22.5°C). The maximum precipitation falls in May (76mm) and minimum in August (34 mm) and January (30 mm). The territory of Gori has been populated since the early Bronze Age. According to the medieval Georgian chronicles, the town of Gori was founded by King David IV (r. 1089-1125) who settled there the refugees from Armenia. However, the fortress of Gori (Goris-Tsikhe), appears to have been in use already in the 7th century, and archaeological evidence indicates to the existence of an urban community in the Classical Antiquity. In 1299-3, Gori was captured by the Alan tribesmen fleeing the Mongol conquest of their original homeland in the North Caucasus. The Georgian king George V recovered the town in 1320, pushing the Alans back over the Caucasus mountains. With the downfall of the medieval Georgian kingdom, Gori -- strategically located on the crossroad of major transit routes -- was frequently targeted by foreign invaders and changed its masters on several occasions. It was first taken and sacked by Uzun Hassan of the Ak Koyunlu in 1477, followed by Tahmasp I of Persia in the mid-16th century. By the end of that century, Gori passed to the Ottomans and became their major outpost in Georgia until being recovered by the Georgians under Simon I of Kartli after heavy fighting in 1599. The town was once again garrisoned by the Persians under Shah Abbas I in 1614. In 1615, Gori was annexed by Georgia from the Russian Empire. Following the successive occupations by the Ottomans (1723-35) and Persians (1735-40s), Gori returned to the Georgian control under the kings Teimuraz II and Erekle II whose efforts helped advance economy and culture in the town. Following the Russian annexation of Georgia, Gori was granted the status of a town within the Tiflis Governorate in 1801. It grew in size and population throughout the 19th century, but was destroyed in the 1920 earthquake. An important industrial center during the Soviet Union, Gori suffered from an economic collapse and the outflow of population during the years of a post-Soviet crisis of the 1990s. Gori is located in the proximity to the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone. It is connected to breakaway South Ossetia's capital Tskhinvali via a railroad spur which has been defunct since the early 1990s. In the 2000s, Georgia has increased military infrastructure in and around the city. Thus, the Central Military Hospital was relocated from Tbilisi to Gori and reequipped in October 2006.[1] On January 18, 2008, Georgia's second NATO-standard military base was inaugurated at Gori. It is to accommodate the 1st Infantry Brigade of the Georgian Ground Forces.[2] On August 9, 2008, Gori was attacked by Russian jets as part of the 2008 War in South Ossetia. Georgia reported 60 civilans dead as a result of bombings of residential buildings.[3] Skynews reported that bombs hit a Georgian military facility (including a munitions warehouse) and civilian apartments were hit by exploding munitions from that warehouse. Gori was reportedly overrun by Russian forces on August 11.[4] Gori and its environs house several notable cultural and historical landmarks. Although for many foreigners Gori is principally known as Joseph Stalin's birthplace, in Georgian historical memory the city has long been associated with its citadel, the Goris-Tsikhe, which is built on a cliffy hill overlooking the central part of the modern city. On another hill, stands the 18th-century St. George's church of Gorijvari, a popular place of pilgrimage. The ancient rock-hewn town of Uplistsikhe and the 7th-century Ateni Sioni Church are located not far from Gori. Stalin's association with the city is emphasized by the Joseph Stalin Museum in downtown Gori and the Stalin monument in front of the City Hall, one of the few such monuments to survive Khrushchev's de-Stalinization program. The monument was a source of controversy in a newly independent Georgia in the 1990s, but the post-Communist government acceded to the Gori citizens' request and left the statue untouched.(wikipedia) VALPARD FILMS http://valpardfilms.awardspace.com/ |
![]() | Recruiter Station Shut Down Recruiter station shut down. Yes its true. Sometimes we win. In this case a demonstration, led by Iraq Vets Against the War (IVAW), marching by the military recruiter stations in the Central District of Seattle diverted into the parking lot and forced the recruiters to close the office. Even more amazing, the outnumbered police decided to defuse the situation by removing their forces from in front of the recruiter's storefront. Its worth watching just to see the look of puzzlement on a reporter's face when the police, who moments before were brandishing pepperspray, abruptly abandon the recruiter station. This action footage is set to David Rovic's powerful song "We'll shut them down." (check out his website at www.davidrovics.com) Next we feature an interview and a couple rap pieces performed by Son, who was in the Seattle area to support Lt. Watada. This is a powerful political rapster, worth checking out, both on the show this week, and on his website: www.sonofnun.net. Then we turn to the case of Agustîn Aguayo, an Army medic who became a conscientious objector while serving in the Army. His formal application for conscientious objector status was turned down by Army brass, but that didn't change how he felt about things, so he did a tour in Iraq without loading his weapon. When they were going to send him back again, he escaped rather than return to the killing fields. His court martial finally occurred recently, and he was given a surprisingly light sentence. In our segment, filmed just before the court martial, we meet his wife, kids, and mother, who were all at Fort Lewis to support Lt. Watada. We finish the show up this week with a rousing song: "The War is Over," performed live from the stage at the Lt. Watada rally. |
