CENTRE WELLINGTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL


'Centre Wellington District High School', or CWDHS, is a fully composite high school located in Fergus, Ontario.
The school was originally called Fergus High School and was constructed in 1928. Later, two additions were built, but eventually, the number of students exceeded the capacity of the building. As a result, a brand new school was built which opened in September 2004. It is run by the Upper Grand District School Board
The school's educational philosophy is centered around three core principles: learning, respect, and community.
Presently the school is under very poor leadership from an inadequate principle, consequntly many students and teachers have begun a movement for a replaced.

Students


CWDHS, as it is commonly known, has an enrollment of over 1500 students. It serves the community of Centre Wellington, which includes Elora and Fergus, as well as Bellwood, Salem, Alma, Ponsonby and Ariss.

As of 2005, CWDHS had approximately 100 teachers and staff.

Similar to most high schools, CWDHS has a vast extra-curricular athletic program in which teams composed of students travel to surrounding schools to compete. Theschool i particularly strong in badminton, cross country,rugby and wrestling.

R.A.R.A.


At CWDHS, an innovative program called "R.A.R.A." (Read Anything, Read Anywhere) involves every student and staff member taking time out of each day to read. It commenced in September, 2005.
The program has been criticized for taking twenty minutes from lessons each day and for being developed more for the male students.
