CENTREVILLE, MICHIGAN

'Centreville' is a village in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village population was 1,579. It is the county seat of St. Joseph County6.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²), all land.
Centreville is the proud home of the Langley covered bridge.

Demographics


As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,579 people, 490 households, and 351 families residing in the village. The population density was 432.4/km² (1,116.9/mi²). There were 541 housing units at an average density of 148.1/km² (382.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 94.74% White, 2.47% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.63% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.58% of the population.
There were 490 households out of which 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.23.
In the village the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 105.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.4 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $33,929, and the median income for a family was $42,955. Males had a median income of $32,692 versus $22,200 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,472. About 8.0% of families and 7.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.9% of those under age 18 and 8.6% of those age 65 or over.

History


Centreville was formerly the home of the Dr. Denton Sleeping Garment Mills, where the well-known ''Dr. Denton's'' brand of blanket sleepers was manufactured.

Famous people from Centreville


Verne Troyer grew up and attended high school in Centreville. Troyer is most well known for his accomplishments as an actor, playing many small roles including the role of "Mini Me" in the Austin Powers movies. Troyer also spent a short time as a stunt double for babies and small children in movies such as Baby's Day Out. He has a small following of loyal fans in the Centreville area.
Matt Thornton, currently a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, grew up and attended high school in Centreville. A left-handed pitcher, he was born September 15, 1976. After attending Grand Valley State University, he was drafted first round 22nd overall in 1998.
