CHAMBLEE CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL

'Chamblee Charter High School' is a public secondary school located in Chamblee, Georgia.
It is one of several combined zoned and magnet schools in DeKalb County and is part of the DeKalb County School System. As a magnet school, Chamblee accepts students from all of DeKalb county as well as its local district.

Timeline

★ Prior to 1917, Chamblee High School and Chamblee Elementary School are housed in a single building on the present site of the First Baptist Church of Chamblee.

★ In 1917, Dekalb County authorizes the purchase of land for the high school on Chamblee Dunwoody road. Construction begins that year.

★ In 1919, first classes are held in the partially completed school.

★ In 1922, M.E. "Prof" Smith is named principal. He will serve as principal for 35 years.

★ In 1924, Ten classrooms and Dekalb County's first gymnasium are added to the campus.

★ In 1928, A home economics building is added to the campus.

★ In 1934, Depression-era WPA funding allows Chamblee High School to add eight new classrooms, a new gymnasium, a canning plant and a machine shop. The school becomes the first in Dekalb County to be accredited by the Southern Association for Secondary Schools and Colleges.

★ On December 8 1941, the entire campus burns to the ground after fire breaks out. Classes are relocated to the area hospitals and Baptist and Methodist churches.

★ In December 1942, the high school is rebuilt and classes resume on campus.

★ In 1950, a lighted general athletic field is built for football and baseball games.

★ In 1962, North Dekalb Stadium opens next door to Chamblee High School.

★ In 1964, the school is remodeled, adding 19 classrooms and five laboratories.

★ In 1965, The Football Team, led by Coach Gene Goff and Senior QB Jackie Smith upset arch rival Tucker 14-0 to win the 4-AA Sub Region title. The scrappy Bulldogs go on to defeat Stephens County 42-13 to win the Region Championship. However, they lose the following week in the State Semi-Final game to eventual State Champion, West Rome, 13-7.

★ In 1966, the new basketball gymnasium, chorus rooms, band rooms and swimming pool are added

★ In 1970, the old basketball gymnasium and home economics building are demolished. A new cafeteria is built on the site.

★ In 1973, the old 1942 classrooms are demolished and a new administration building and library are built.

★ In 1986, the Chamblee High boys cross-country team won the AAA state championship. Senior Johnny Krueger won the individual state championship.

★ In 1991, the first Magnet class Enters Chamblee High School.

★ In 1994, Chamblee High was named a National School of Excellence.

★ In 1994-1995, Chamblee High students were devastated by the separate suicides of 2 students, Arthur Catherwood and Omari Robinson.

★ In 1995, The first Magnet class Graduates

★ In 1999, Chamblee High placed 9th place overall at the National Science Olympiad tournament held at the University of Chicago.

★ In 2001, Chamblee High was named a State School of Excellence.

★ In 2001, Chamblee High became a charter school.

★ In 2004, a senior class prank displayed pornography over Chamblee's internal video news feed.

★ In 2004, the Chamblee team for We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution won the state tournament, advancing to the national tournament held in Washington, D.C. Despite winning only Unit 5 out of six units, and with one school winning three out of six, Chamblee won the state tournament by receiving second place in all other units. This was Chamblee's first We The People team in ten years.

★ In 2005, Chamblee competed in the national competition for We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution in Washington, D.C. Though they did not place in the top ten, they got an award for receiving the best Unit 4 score in the nation.

★ In 2005, teen broadcasting network Channel One featured CCHS in an episode of its high school road tour.

★ In 2005, for the first time in 22 years, Chamblee's football team advanced to the post-season, losing in the second round of the state championships to Rome, 27-17.

★ In 2006, Chamblee finished as a runner-up in the Class AAAA state soccer playoffs, losing to Marist, 2-1.

★ In 2006, Chamblee students tied for 6th place in SAT scores in Georgia, with an average score of 1666. Chamblee beat out all other high schools in DeKalb County, except for the Dekalb School of the Arts.

★ In 2006, Chamblee High sends two 2006 graduates to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

★ In Fall 2006, Chamblee High School's Cross Country team, goes to state championship [1].

★ In 2006-2007, Chamblee High was previewed on FOX5 for having rat problems. One of the students said in an interview "We got rats!"

★ In February 2007, Chamblee Charter High School began a program called "Zero Hour," designed to help failing freshmen with morning tutorials.

★ In July 2007, After many years as Chamblee Charter High School's Band Director, Mr. Bryan Hatmaker resigned as of July from the CHS Band Department.

★ In July 2007, Mr. Brian Ely was named the interim CCHS Marching Bulldogs/Marching Band director

★ On August 7th 2007, Mr. Ralph Guitierrez was named the new Chamblee Charter High School Band Director. He will also direct the CCHS Marching Bulldogs.

★ Steve Wallace, Class of 1981, graduated and lettered (football, offensive tackle) at Auburn University, now retired and lives in Buckhead. He continuously shows his support for the Bulldogs. He previously played for the San Francisco 49ers

★ Carlton L. Curtis, Class of 1968, is the Vice President of Industry Affairs for the Foodservice and Hospitality Division of Coca-Cola North America. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of Georgia Foundation and is the past president of the University of Georgia's National Alumni Association. He also serves on the Board of Governors of the Children's Miracle Network, the Board of Directors of the National 4-H Council, the Executive Advisory Committee of the Campbell School of Business at Berry College and the Board of Trustees of the Howard School of Atlanta.
