'Chanhassen' is a city located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was estimated to be 23,864 in 2006.[1] Although the bulk of Chanhassen is in Carver County, it also extends into Hennepin County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 59.3 km² (22.9 mi²). 53.8 km² (20.8 mi²) of it is land and 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it (9.26%) is water.
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 20,321 people, 6,914 households, and 5,524 families residing in the city. The population density was 377.6/km² (978.1/mi²). There were 7,013 housing units at an average density of 130.3/km² (337.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.90% White, 0.75% African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.83% Asian, 0.41% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.98% of the population.
There were 6,914 households out of which 51.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.2% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% were non-families. 15.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.33.
In the city the population was spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 37.0% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $84,215, and the median income for a family was $93,092. Males had a median income of $62,112 versus $38,821 for females. The per capita income for the city was $36,008. About 1.4% of families and 1.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.2% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.
Chanhassen is the international headquarters of Eckankar, a teaching founded by Paul Twitchell in 1965. It exists in most countries throughout the world, and is run largely on a volunteer basis through "ECK Centers". The teaching was first known as the "Ancient Science of Soul Travel" and is now called "The Religion of the Light and Sound of God". The teaching emphasizes the value of personal spiritual and physical experiences as the most natural way back to God and does not advocate reliance on external authority, books or dogmatic beliefs. The term "Soul Travel" is copyrighted by Eckankar. It describes one of the basic tenets of the teaching; soul (awareness or consciousness) can leave the body in full consciousness and travel in other worlds.
Chanhassen is the world headquarters for Snap Fitness, a chain of 24 hour health clubs that operates through franchising. The company was founded in 2003 by Peter Taunton, a health club owner and raquetball pro who was raised Willmar, Minnesota.

Chanhassen is located in Minnesota's 2nd congressional district, represented by John Kline, a Republican, scoring 2.8% progressive on a range of issues[2] and 88% conservative based on 2006 House votes.[3]
