The Cares' River Route - Ruta del Cares - HISTORY - HISTORIA
HOMAGE TO THE WORKERS that worked in the Water Channel and the Cares' River Route that it is one of the more beautiful and comfortable roads in Mountains of " Picos de Europa ". Layout in a startling narrow pass that conforms the spectacular " DIVINE GORGE OF THE CARES' RIVER ". Among Cain (León) and Puente Poncebos(Asturias). WATER CHANNEL From 1915 at 1921 the Society Electra of Viesgo carried out the reception works and conduction of the waters of the Cares' river, from Cain's village (León), until the hydroelectric station of Puente Poncebos, in Asturias. The difficulty of the land and the technical problems, modified the initial idea of a tunnel between Cain's prey and the camera of load of Camarmeña, for 11 Kms (SEVEN MILES) of channel. The result is today's channel that with a difference of one for thousand so soon appears in the surface as it goes into in one of the 71 tunnels drilled by hand. More than 500 workers worked in the Channel. Of the hardness of the same one are testimony of 11 lives that got lost in different accidents. THE CURRENT PATH OF THE CARES' RIVER To eliminate the difficulties of maintenance of the channel on the old path, they undertook the works of the current path, that were prolonged from September of 1945 until June of 1950. For this, were carried out diverse works, as the chopping of the rock, for loads of dynamite that opened the path, to lift walls with stone, to build the path and to level. To install rudimentary manual cable cars to cross people and it loads from a side to another of the river, or to cut wood to build the bridges on abysses until of 196 feet high.. THE WORKERS HAD TO WORK TIED WITH THICK STRINGS. Two workers died in this work, carried out by 45 workers, almost all of Cain, Valdeón and Cabrales that taking a risk their life built the most beautiful and comfortable mountain route in "Picos de Europa" National Park Music: 1- REX TREMENDAE 2- LACRIMOSA "REQUIEM" - MOZART

"Exploring Yosemite Falls in the DRY Season"
3.5 million people visit Yosemite National Park every year; most of those people never get more than a quarter of a mile from their cars while they're in the Park!!! The highlight of their visit is usually to get a view from the valley of Yosemite Falls above, the world's fifth tallest waterfall. Yosemite Falls consists of 1,430 foot high Upper Yosemite Falls, where the water falls down to the "Cascades" section which drops the water another 675 feet. 320 foot high Lower Yosemite Falls completes this incredibly beautiful waterfall system. During the Spring snow melt season, an astounding 2,400 gallons of water descend the falls EVERY SECOND! Approximately 50 square miles of land drain down to Yosemite Falls. I've now been to Yosemite around fifty times in my life, and have enjoyed exploring many areas not normally seen by people. One of those areas rarely ever seen by visitors is the "Cascades" section of the waterfall (between the Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls). During the DRY season which occurs in the early Autumn most years, it's possible to work your way over to this area to see the highly polished granite and explore the large cave there and the large empty water channel that, for much of the year, has massive amounts of water raging loudly through it. It's always an amazing experience to sit in quiet solitude at the base of Upper Yosemite Falls and realize that water has been carving the channel around me for millions of years. It's also a surreal experience, knowing that, simultaneously to me sitting there, busloads and carloads of people are continuously photographing Yosemite Falls from the valley below, as I sit contemplating in this "hidden" part of the Falls above them that they will never see. If you ever want to explore this area in person, just be careful to look out for the rattlesnakes that inhabit the underbrush areas! I've included a couple of photos of a BIG four foot long rattlesnake I walked by on my latest visit to the Cascades area. I hope you enjoy looking at these photos I took at a place almost none of the visitors to Yosemite will ever see in person. The song is "In My Life - If We Never Meet Again" by Selah (This is a song that combines two different songs into one song; I only used the "In My Life" portion, and "looped" it to play twice. The lyrics of "There are places I remember, all my life" TRULY applies to how I feel about Yosemite :) :) ) Here's a link to another of my Yosemite videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwm9GiBqaqc

Streams and Rivers: Hazen Audel and Rob Nelson on the Smith
These are bodies of flowing water moving in one direction. Streams and rivers can be found everywhere—they get their starts at headwaters, which may be springs, snowmelt or even lakes, and then travel all the way to their mouths, usually another water channel or the ocean. The characteristics of a river or stream change during the journey from the source to the mouth. The temperature is cooler at the source than it is at the mouth. The water is also clearer, has higher oxygen levels, and freshwater fish such as trout and heterotrophs can be found there. Towards the middle part of the stream/river, the width increases, as does species diversity—numerous aquatic green plants and algae can be found. Toward the mouth of the river/stream, the water becomes murky from all the sediments that it has picked up upstream, decreasing the amount of light that can penetrate through the water. Since there is less light, there is less diversity of flora, and because of the lower oxygen levels, fish that require less oxygen, such as catfish and carp, can be found.
