CHARACTERS IN FIST OF THE NORTH STAR
The following is a 'list of fictional characters from the manga and anime franchise ''Fist of the North Star''' by Tetsuo Hara and Buronson. Characters are organized primarily by their fighting styles and allegiance whenever possible, and ordered by the story arcs where they primarily appear. All characters are from the original manga unless otherwise noted.
Major characters
While the series had a constantly changing cast of main characters, these are the three main characters who appeared during the original manga's entire run.
★ 'Kenshiro' -The protagonist of the series. The youngest of RyÅ«ken's adopted sons and his successor of the Hokuto Shinken style.
★ 'Bat' - A young thief who accompanies Kenshiro in his journey. He grows up and becomes founder of the Hokuto Army.
★ 'Lin' -An orphaned girl whom Kenshiro saves in the beginning of the series. She grows into a young woman and forms the Hokuto Army with Bat.
★ 'Raoh' - The main antagonist for the majority of the first half of the series. The eldest of RyÅ«ken's adopted sons, also trained in Hokuto Shinken. He takes on the mantle of Ken-ÅŒ ("Fist King"), the self-proclaimed "Conqueror of the Century's End".
Hokuto Shinken
Toki
'Toki' (トã‚) is the second of the four Hokuto Shinken brothers and the true brother of Raoh (and by extension, Kaioh and Sayaka). Toki was the most skilled practicioner of Hokuto Shinken, and was chosen by RyÅ«ken as the true successor to the Hokuto Shinken school, but during the nuclear holocaust, Toki received radiation poisoning while trying to save Kenshiro and Yuria. This poisoning left him weak and sickly, and as such he renounced the succession to the Hokuto Shinken school and the responsibility fell on the next worthiest successor, Kenshiro. Toki's self-made style, ''Hokuto UjÅ Ken'' (北斗有情拳, "North Star Humane Fist") is an art adept at both healing and destroying. Toki became a wandering doctor, easing the people's ills, as well as defending them from abuse. When he killed someone with his style, the person actually died while feeling great euphoria and pleasure instead of horrifying pain. Toki sacrificed his own life to make KenshirÅ become stronger by sadness and grief since Hokuto Shinken is based on sadness and loneliness for his upcoming battle against Raoh.
★ ''Voiced by'': Takaya Hashi (TV series), Hideyuki Tanaka (''Shin Hokuto no Ken''), Kenyuu Horiuchi (''Shin KyÅ«seishu Densetsu'' movie series), Tetsuharu Ota (''Shin KyÅ«seishu Densetsu'' movie series, as a child)
Jagi
'Jagi' (ジャギ) is the third of RyÅ«ken's four adopted sons. Deceptive and evil. Jagi stops at nothing to win, including the use of guns. Hideously disfigured by KenshirÅ after trying to kill him, he hid his face with an iron helmet. Jagi is obsessed with destroying his younger brother and his reputation. Persuaded Shin to abduct Yuria, and later killed Rei's parents and sold his sister into slavery, inscribing seven scars on his chest so KenshirÅ would be blamed. He was killed by KenshirÅ's ''Hyakuretsu Ken'', as Kenshiro said "An ugly death suits you right", revealed to KenshirÅ that Toki and Raoh were still alive before he exploded. Although Jagi is officially one of the four Hokuto brothers, he is never really mentioned in the manga again. Instead the series would refer to Ken, Raoh and Toki as the ''Three Hokuto Brothers'', probably because Jagi was disowned by his brothers and became a common wasteland thug. Raoh even commented that Jagi wasn't strong enough against KenshirÅ, and would do a great service to him if KenshirÅ killed him. As a youngster, he usually trained with Raoh.
★ ''Voiced by'': Kouji Totani (TV series), Chikao Ohtsuka (1986 movie), David ItÅ (''Shin KyÅ«seishu Densetsu'' movie series)
Previous masters
★ 'RyÅ«ken' (リュウケン): The 63rd successor of Hokuto Shinken. Known as 'Kasumi Ramon' in the manga ''Fist of the Blue Sky''. He was the sifu who adopted and trained Raoh, Toki, Jagi, and KenshirÅ. After choosing KenshirÅ as the next successor, RyÅ«ken was slain by Raoh, largely by chance, as he suffered a temporary heart attack just when he was about to seal Raoh's fist after failing to prevent his misuse of Hokuto Shinken. KenshirÅ did not know the real cause of RyÅ«ken's death, having been told that RyÅ«ken died from illness, until Toki revealed the shameful secret during their first battle. Both KenshirÅ and Raoh remember a lot of RyÅ«ken's teachings whenever they are in difficult situations. He makes a few cameo appearances in ''Fist of the Blue Sky'' as an adult during the 1970's and a child in 1935.
★ ''Voiced by'': Junji Chiba (TV series, episode 5) → RyÅ«ji Saikachi (TV series, episode 30 and onward), Kouji Totani (TV series, as a young man), Chikao Ohtsuka (''Shin KyÅ«seishu Densetsu'' movie series)
★ 'KÅryÅ«' (コウリュウ): KÅryÅ« studied Hokuto Shinken with RyÅ«ken his old rival, but yielded the succession despite having the stronger style to avoid having the tragic fate of death shared by multiple Hokuto Shinken martial artists. He is also known as the "Hokuto Dragon." To prevent any knowledge regarding his martial art to be passed on, KÅryÅ« led an ascetic life in the mountains, but was later sought out and killed by Raoh. He had two sons named Zeus and Aus who were spared by Raoh who told not to seek the same tragic path as Raoh and Toki.
★ ''Voiced by'': Hidekatsu Shibata
Nanto Seiken
Nanto Roku Seiken
The are the six primary masters of , the 102 other branches being their tributaries. Each of them has a fate linked to a certain star in the constellation, aka the Milk Dipper (part of Sagittarius in Western astrology). Yuda betrayed the Nanto Rokusei and joined Raoh's army; after this, the fates of all of the Nanto stars turned tragic. Each of the Nanto Roku Seiken (with the exception of Yuria) is affiliated with an avian totem: Eagle, Swan, Crane, Heron and Phoenix.
Shin

: 'Star': .
: Notable for being the first major antagonist in the series, Shin was Kenshiro's close friend, but secretly loved Yuria. However, Jagi manipulated Shin into believing Kenshiro was not strong enough to protect Yuria in the new age, and that Shin must claim her for himself. Following this, Shin engaged Kenshiro and defeated him, engraving the seven Big Dipper-shaped stab wounds onto his chest, and abducting Yuria. Later, he took the name of "King" and raised an army of thugs to build himself an empire, building Yuria the city of Southern Cross. Yuria was unable to accept that so much evil was being done in her name, and seemingly leapt to her death. At the request of the Nanto Goshasei, Shin agreed to pretend Yuria was dead to keep Raoh from taking over Southern Cross to get her. During Yuria's absent, he keeps a life-like mannequin of Yuria's likeness in her throne. A furious KenshirŠthen caught up to Shin and defeats him with the ''Hokuto Jūji Zan'' (North Star Cross Kill), inscribing Shin's emblem of the Bloody Cross on his chest. Refusing to die from Hokuto Shinken, Shin leapts to his death, maintaining that Yuria had died. Despite Shin's earlier betrayal, KenshirŠprepares a grave for him, claiming "he loved the same woman (he did)". In the 1986 movie, Shin confronts Raoh, who comes to Southern Cross to capture Yuria. When Kenshiro later fights Shin, Shin dies from previously inflicted Hokuto Shinken wounds he suffered from his unseen battle with Raoh

: Rei's parents were slain and his sister kidnapped by a man with seven scars on his chest (actually Jagi). He was hired as a mercenary by the Fang Tribe to attack Mamiya's village, however, he betrayed them, sensing the noble purpose in KenshirÅ. Working together, the two of them and Mamiya were able to eliminate the Fang King and recover Rei's sister Airi. He is the first one to meet Raoh, while trying to save Lin and Airi during an attack of Raoh's Invasion Division. Sensing Raoh's immense power, he decides to fight him in order to repay Ken for giving him back his humanity. He uses a special technique, which empowers him to defeat his opponent while sacrificing his own life. But Raoh sees through it and defeats Rei, who is left with three days to live in pain and agony. Before he dies, though, he is able to kill Yuda, who had kidnapped his love Mamiya years ago and scarred her with his personal mark. Tetsuo Hara admitted that Rei is one of his favourite supporting character and that it was a difficulty for him to work on Rei's agonizing three days of life. Rei's death was portrayed in a respectful way in which we don't really see graphical explosion of him as happened to any common thugs killed by Hokuto Shinken. He is arguably the most popular of the six Nanto stars, as evidence by his appearances outside the manga. He is the only Nanto Seiken character to appear as a support character in ''Jump Ultimate Stars'' and is the star of his spinoff manga, ''Rei Gaiden''. He plays a prominent role in the OVA ''Yuria Den'', where it is established that he met the Last Nanto General (Yuria) before meeting Ken.

: The traitor of the Nanto Roku Seiken. After the nuclear war, Yuda broke up the Six Nanto Stars by joining Raoh's army along with 27 subordinate branches (it is later revealed he was manipulated by Souther into doing so). Vain and treacherous, Yuda keeps a concubine of female slaves that worship his beauty and is more than willing to sacrifice his own underlings for his own gain. In the past, he kidnapped Mamiya on her 20th birthday, killing her parents before her eyes and making her part of her concubine before she eventually escaped. He fights Rei, who sought to avenge her honor. Yuda has been envious of Rei prior to the war, feeling that the beauty of Rei's SuichÅ Ken style was overshadowing his KÅkaku Ken style. After he is defeated by Rei, he stabs himself with Rei's hands so he could die "by someone beautiful like him." At his death, he concedes that Rei is more beautiful.

Sensing that KenshirÅ reacted to his ki, ShÅ« volunteered himself as the tenth opponent and handily defeated the boy. When Souther demanded his death, ShÅ« refused and instead clawed out his own eyes, carrying KenshirÅ from the temple. ShÅ« taught himself to see with his heart, and later leads a resistance movement against Souther. ShÅ«'s son Shiva, who ShÅ« did not want taking part in his tragic destiny, dies saving KenshirÅ from Souther after his defeat. Later, ShÅ«'s hideout is raided, and ShÅ« allows himself to be tormented and slain to protect his young charges. During his final moment, he miraculously recover his eyesight and sees the grown KenshirÅ for the first and last time. : ShÅ-sei rules the other Nanto stars; therefore, none of the other Nanto arts can defeat Souther implying that he is the strongest of the Nanto fighters. Souther establishes himself as after Raoh's injury and becomes known as a cruel and heartless man, kidnapping children to build his Holy Cross Mausoleum. When he was a child, he was orphaned and adopted by the previous Nanto HÅ-Å Ken successor ÅŒgai, who instructed him in the art. When he was fifteen, he was blindfolded and attacked by an assailant. He defended himself, but when he removed the blindfold, he discovered that it had been ÅŒgai who had attacked. He had not dodged Souther's blow and was mortally wounded. He told Souther that this was the way of their art, that the young replace the old. Souther was crushed, and vowed to never feel love again, believing that it only brought pain. After meeting ShÅ«, KenshirÅ fights against Souther and loses horribly when Hokuto Shinken does not work on Souther's body. After ShÅ«'s death, he fights Souther again and is able to discover that Souther has ''situs inversus dextrocardia''-- his heart is on his right side and his pressure points' positions are subsequently reversed from where a normal person's would be. He defeats Souther with a merciful "UjÅ MoshÅ Ha", much to his surprise. Despite his tyranny, he is shocked that KenshirÅ shows mercy towards him. He then dies in front of Ogai's shrine regaining his humanity. In the movie ''RaÅ Den: Jun'ai no ShÅ'', his death scene is different than in the manga or TV series; there is no mention of his sensei Ogai or the reason why he build the pyramid, also the scene where he embraces his sensei's body is omitted. Instead, he commits suicide by stabbing himself with his fist, refusing to succumb to Ken's killing blow.

After the death of the other Nanto stars, she becomes the Last General of Nanto and orders the Goshasei against Raoh. Raoh manages to kidnap her, but discovers that she is dying of radiation poisoning. This sadness enables him to use the ''MusÅ Tensei'' against KenshirÅ. After Raoh gives his life to the heavens, Ken and Yuria leave together, eventually settling in ShÅki's village. Yuria eventually dies of her illness. She has no martial arts skills and is shown to have only empathic abilities. However, she has had several men fall in love with her, including Toki, Raoh, Shin, her half-brother JÅ«za and KenshirÅ, with KenshirÅ being the only man she loved back.

Jūza and Raoh have known each other since childhood, Jūza usually getting the best of Raoh, quickly angering him. Ryūken then told Raoh that Jūza was good of a fighter as he was. Jūza was actually able to briefly take Kokuoh-Go from Raoh, which was a first. Raoh sits down on a boulder and refuses to move until his horse comes back. Eventually Jūza comes back to fight Raoh, and Jūza definitely gives Raoh a tough fight. Raoh is just too strong and eventually Jūza is hit with a fatal blow. Jūza falls on his back apparently dead. As Raoh begins to walk away, Jūza's body leaps up for one last attack which Raoh blocks. Before Raoh counterattacks however, he realizes that Jūza is dead and that his body was still trying to attack, so he lets Jūza's body fall to the ground lifeless. Raoh, comments to himself, "Jūza truly was terrible" in respect for the tough battle Jūza gave him. Jūza was the only member of the ''Goshasei'' omitted from the ''Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu'' film series.
