'Charles Gordon Howell III' (born June 20, 1979) is an American golfer.
Howell was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, the home town of the Masters Tournament. He was a member of Augusta Country Club, which is adjacent to Amen Corner at Augusta National Golf Club.
Howell graduated from Westminster Schools of Augusta, and soon after attended Oklahoma State University. In 2000, he was a member of the winning team and also the individual winner at the NCAA Division I Golf Championships with a record-setting 23-under-par performance. Also in 2000, he won Haskins Award honoring the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the United States.
He turned professional in 2001 and he was the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. He has only won two PGA Tour titles, the 2002 Michelob Championship at Kingsmill and the 2007 Nissan Open, but nonetheless he is regarded as one of the most promising young American golfers. In 2002, he finished ninth on the PGA Tour money list. On February 18, 2007, Howell took the title in the Nissan Open by narrowly beating Phil Mickelson in a playoff.
In 2003, Howell was a member of the United States Presidents Cup team. He has featured in the top 15 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
Howell made a strong start to the 2007 PGA Tour and is currently in sixth in the FedEx Cup standings.
