Named after former mayor Charles W. Flanagan, 'Charles W. Flanagan High School' opened its doors in 1996 as the first public high school in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Flanagan High School is located near Broward County's C.B. Smith Park and the Walter C. Young Middle School and Resource Center.
While it was, at one time, the largest public high school in Broward County and one of the largest in the country , Flanagan’s enrollment is now just over 3000. It operates on a block schedule with 4 periods in a day per semester. Under the leadership of its current principal Dr. Sharon Shaulis, Flanagan High School was featured the "Top 1000 high schools in the nation" by NEWSWEEK magazine (2005), based on such statistics as Advanced Placement enrollment.
Flanagan High School is the home of the National Champion NJROTC unit of 2007, which is also the three-time running State Champion for the state of Florida.
