CHATSWORTH, GEORGIA

'Chatsworth' is a city in Murray County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Dalton, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,531 at the 2000 census, but was estimated around 3,890 as of the 2005 census. The city is the county seat of Murray County. According to a popular legend, the town received its name after a road sign with the word "Chatsworth" fell off a passing freight train nearby. Someone put the sign on a post, and the name stuck¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.3 km² (4.7 mi²). 12.2 km² (4.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.42%) is water.

There were 1,416 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males.
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,531 people, 1,416 households, and 945 families residing in the city. The population density was 289.5/km² (749.5/mi²). There were 1,546 housing units at an average density of 126.7/km² (328.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.66% White, 1.16% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.31% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.49% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,273, and the median income for a family was $44,063. Males had a median income of $32,688 versus $25,033 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,218. About 13.0% of families and 17.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.0% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.
