History
Chestermere's history begins with the construction of the headworks of an irrigation water supply which formed Chestermere Lake. Eventually, residents were attracted to the area for its recreation opportunities and close proximity to Calgary. The Summer Village of Chestermere Lake was incorporated on April 1, 1977.
On March 1, 1993, Chestermere was incorporated as a town although its present population actually renders it larger than some Albertan cities.

Chestermere is located approximately 20 minutes east of the City of Calgary's downtown core via the Trans-Canada Highway. Chestermere's primary attraction is the 2.65 square kilometre lake and an 18 hole golf course[2].
Chestermere Lake offers all residents and visitors summer and winter activity. It provides day use parks for launching boats, and family areas for the enjoyment of the outdoors.[3]

Contemporary issues
Although Chestermere is considered a separate town in its own right, its proximity to Calgary has led to occasional questions regarding possible annexation as Calgary grows. As of summer 2006, the City of Calgary was in negotiations with the Municipal District of Rocky View to annex extensive tracts of land between Calgary's present eastern limits and Chestermere. According to the latest map [5], the city's current annexation proposal would place its eastern city limits only a half section from Chestermere's western outskirts.
