CHIEF OF STAFF (MILITARY)

The 'chief of staff' is the chief aide to the commander of larger military formations and units. However, it is sometimes the case that the chief of staff is in fact far more powerful than the theoretical commander. This is usually the case if the commander is a ceremonial head of the armed forces such as a Head of State.
