Chipata will act as the Zambian rail-head and entry point for the new rail link being constructed to Mchinji in Malawi. When completed in 2009, this will allow a new through-route for rail traffic from Zambia via Malawi to Mozambique and ultimately the Indian Ocean port city of Nacala. This second rail route to the Indian Ocean (the other being the TanZam link to Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania) is expected to provide faster access to a deepwater port from Zambia than currently exists.
