 | Church of St Francis of Assisi in Goa Church of St. Francis of Assisi. The structure is built of laterite blocks and is lime-plastered. The church faces west and has a nave with three chapels on either side, a choir, two altars in the transept and a main altar. The internal buttress walls, separating the chapels and supporting the gallery on top, have frescoes showing intricate floral designs. |

 | Church Service - Saint Francis and Surveillance (Assisi) Apart from being Saint Francis' town and hosting a basilica in his honor, the nice medieval town of Assisi has always been a place of tolerance and solidarity: after WWII it gave a home to homeless Jews and, when pope John Paul II organized a meeting of all religious leaders in 1986 and 2002, they all came to Assisi. These days the people lying on the basilica's steps aren't the lepers that Saint Francis used to help, but half naked tourists with a new generation of beggars preying upon these well-heeled pilgrims. In order to change this crowded situation, the right-wing mayor decided to impose heavy restrictions and control over the whole city center, making the church areas and their steps off limits and putting up surveillance services and cameras. The seraphic Saint Francis, due to his singular love towards the blessed Virgin Mary, always took diligent care of the tiny church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Angels, also known as the Porziuncola. It is here that he settled with his friar brothers, that he began with Saint Clare of Assisi the order of the Poor Clares, and here where he concluded the course of his admirable life. The Saintly Founder obtained from Pope Honorious III the historical indulgence, which the Supreme Pontiffs successively confirmed and extended to numerous other churches.
