'Claro' (Spanish: ''clear'' or ''clearly'') is the largest and the most powerful mobile phone network in the Americas. It is part of the telecom group América Móvil which is the fourth largest mobile phone network operator in the world, with more than 130 million customers. It serves clients in Brazil, Peru, Chile, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

The Claro brand was launched in 2003, in Brazil, by the merger of América Móvil-owned operators ATL (Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo), BCP (São Paulo metropolitan area, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Ceará, Paraíba, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte), Americel (Acre, Tocantins, Rondônia, the Brazilian Federal District, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul), Tess Celular (other areas of São Paulo state) and Claro Digital (Rio Grande do Sul). Currently, Claro also operates in the states of Bahia, Sergipe, Santa Catarina, Paraná and Minas Gerais.

Guatemala


Claro was launched in Guatemala on September 7th 2006 as a rebranding of the Telgua owned 'PCS Digital' and 'Alo de PCS' brands. In Guatemala, at march 31 it has more than 2.5 million suscribers under this brand, with services on CDMA 2000 1X and GSM/GPRS/EDGE technology.
Its the only provider with license to operate in both 900 and 1900 mhz, it CDMA 2000 1X operates only in 1900 mhz; its GSM/GPRS/EDGE Network operates in both 900/1900 mhz.
Claro Guatemala its working to lauch the first UMTS/HSDPA network in Guatemala not late from january 2008.

Peru


Claro was launched as a rebrandig of TIM.

Dominican Republic


The brand was launched in the Dominican Republic in January 31, 2007, after the acquisition of Verizon Dominicana in April 3, 2006.
Since August 7, 2007 has 3G UMTS service in the 850 MHz band.

Central America


The brand was launched in El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua on September 2006 as rebranding 'PCS Digital', 'Alo', 'Personal' and 'Enitel' brands.
Claro operates in El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua individual GSM/GPRS networks over 1900 mhz licences.
Claro Honduras planned to launch soon the first UMTS 1900 mhz network in Honduras.
Claro Nicaragua has launch the first UMTS network on Central America over 850 mhz, also the first UMTS 850 commercial in Latin America.
