Biography
Cody lives with his mother Carey Martin and twin brother Zack Martin in a suite on the 23rd floor of the Tipton Hotel in Boston, where his mother works as the headline singer. Cody appears to be an academically "gifted" child, unlike Zack; in some areas, his intelligence surpasses that of his mother. (Example: In "What The Hey?" it was revealed that he does her taxes.) Of course, he still tends to rely on her advice, both because he tries to be obedient, and because he is shy and lacks her life experience.
Cody, unlike Zack, is genuinely interested in intellectual pursuits and talented at academics, generally outshining his brother in school while Zack outshines Cody in popularity. However, he is generally far less confident and assertive than Zack, and Zack tends to have a better grasp of what is "cool" than Cody. Cody generally tries to obey rules and be good when separated from Zack, but when the two are together, their activities tend to be disruptive or downright destructive to the hotel or other areas and situations. Cody generally doesn't stand up to his brother, and lets him pull him into many schemes that typically backfire. Cody is far more sensitive than his brother (Carey once pointed out that Cody cried when she vacuumed up dust bunnies.) He is also described as the perfect guy, being cute, shy, sweet, sensitive, smart, yet likes sports like most guys. He shows genuine affection to animals, having cried when his hawk Bubba, whom he hatched and raised, left him.
Cody is forced into Zack's schemes, i.e. dressing up as a girl for money in ''The Fairest of Them All'' and pretending to be Zack for a dance competition in ''Footloser''. Cody is also usually taken advantage of by Zack and his wild schemes, like when Zack pulls down Cody's pants on "Risk It All". Cody has shown interest in many things, including magic tricks, mime, baking, dance, mathematics, and cooking. He is also interested in becoming a Supreme Court Justice and a hockey player. He likes to carry "Blanky", a security blanket, around with him for security and comfort. He briefly ceased having Blanky in ''Cody Goes to Camp''. Cody has an astigmatism, as stated in ''Big Hair & Baseball '' and ''Risk It All''.
Cody has shown interest in girls, but less so than his twin brother. He is often annoyed or jealous of Zack's crush on Maddie and sometimes tries to stop them from getting too close. Cody however kisses a girl in the series before Zack. As a rule, Cody is a lot less confident and smooth around girls than Zack is, although Cody's sensitivity often wins the girls over, especially if Zack's scheming turns them off. Cody also becomes frightened more easily than Zack in ''The Ghost of Suite 613'', except in the episode ''Scary Movie'', where Zack is more scared from the movie they watched than Cody. Though Cody is generally nicer than Zack, he has been mean to his brother in some episodes (i.e. ''French 101'', ''The Ghost of Suite 613'', ''Heck's Kitchen'', ''Scary Movie'', etc.), and has shown signs of a mean streak such as fake crying shown in ''French 101''. When stressed he occasionally yells and is very condescending during these fits. Although Cody and Zack are close, being twins, and care deeply about one another, their radically different personalities often cause them to clash, and they are often frustrated by each other. For example, Cody's obsessive, perfectionist nature can lead him to act like a control freak, such as ''Band in Boston''. For his part, Zack can be selfish and thoughtless, such as in ''Moseby's Big Brother''. Cody can say things about his brother that aren't particularly nice, especially if he is angry with him; he has stated that he believes that he is superior, at least academically, to his brother. Cody has stated several times, only half-jokingly, that he believes Zack will end up in jail (to be fair, this has nearly happened on two occasions.)
He usually tends to dress neatly and carefully, such as wearing a sweater vest. Although he dressed cool (like Zack) in Grounded on the 23rd Floor. He has also appeared many times just wearing a shirt and a pair of boxer shorts, as in "The Fairest of Them All". Unlike Zack, Cody is preppy. Cody enjoys miming, but is not good at it. He played the keyboard for the band Rock Squared, as shown in ''Band in Boston''. He is very skilled at cooking as seen in the episodes, ''Heck's Kitchen'', ''Cookin' With Romeo and Juliet'', and ''Birdman of Boston''. He is sometimes manipulated by Zack to cook for money.
In the episode ''Super Twins'', when the twins wish on a shooting star that they'll have superpower, Cody gains telekinesis and telepathy and becomes Brain Man, which Zack continuously teases him about. As BM is a common acronym for bowel movement. However, he loses these abilities at the end of the episode, due to it being Zack's dream. It is revealed that he is ticklish.
The Other Side of Cody
Cody is not always as nice as he sounds. In the episode ''French 101'', he starts to say to Zack "I am going to kick your ---!" but Mr. Mosbey interrupts, saying, "Derriere" just before he can say the last word, resulting in Cody saying, "That too!" In addition, Cody has shown a manipulative side. Some examples are on ''French 101'' with his fake crying and on ''Scary Movie'' where he manipulates Janice and Jessica into holding him at the movie theater. He has a tendency to sometimes manipulate his brother and make fun of his intelligence.
While he is not as much of a troublemaker as Zack is, Cody also has his share of troubles he created, although he usually does not mean to make trouble. For instance, in the episode Pilot Your Own Life his advice caused Maddie and London to fight over who would be the best fashion designer and it has also made employees at the Tipton, like Esteban and his mother not to show up for work and pursue their dream careers thus causing some disruption to the Tipton's operations.
Relationships
Cody has had relationships with several girls but is not quite the smooth talker his brother is:
★ In ''Twins at the Tipton'', it is revealed that he used to have a girlfriend named Irma, but she dumped him and formed a relationship with her camp ex-boyfriend Joaquín. Later on in the episode, twins Jessica and Janice (Rebecca Rosso and Camilla Rosso), help him get over it, much to Zack's dismay as he was hoping to have a good time with Jessica at least. The girls also appear in several more episodes, ''Ask Zack'', ''Loosely Ballroom'', ''Scary Movie'', ''Birdman of Boston'', and ''Lost in Translation''.
★ In ''The Fairest of Them All'', he falls for beauty pageant contestant, Rebecca (Victoria Justice) and falls into a series of misadventures to get close to her.
★ In ''Crushed'', he avoids an obsessive girl named Agnes (Allie Grant). She later turns her attention to Zack (that episode and ''A Midsummer's Nightmare'').
★ In ''A Midsummer's Nightmare'', his girlfriend Gwen (Selena Gomez) dumps him after one day of dating when her character Hermia in the Shakespeare play ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' kisses Zack (Lysander). It gets more complicated as Zack's real love interest, Vanessa (Gage Golighty), shows a romantic interest in Cody.
★ In ''French 101'', both he and Zack have an interest in the French ambassador's daughter Jolie (probably the first time they liked the same girl). However, in the end, she chooses Bob.
★ In ''Miniature Golf'', he and Barbra Brownstein go out on double date with Zack and Ella at a Miniature Golf Course. In the end they go the Library as study date.
★ In ''Club Twin'' Barbara kisses him and he says he couldn't be happier.
★ In ''Baggage'', he meets an older girl, Shina, at London Tipton's suite party after the concert.
★ In ''Sleepover Suite'', it is shown that Cody likes a girl named Stacie from school.
