2000s alignment

Competitiveness

As with most urban districts, Colorado's 1st District has proven to be friendly territory for Democrats. Based almost wholly in the city of Denver, the 1st has not elected a Republican since Patricia Schroeder (D) defeated incumbent Mike McKevitt (R) in 1972. African-Americans make up 8 percent of the district while Latinos account for 23 percent. George W. Bush received 31% of the vote in this district in 2004. The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index score of D +18.
