COLUMBIA CITY, OREGON

'Columbia City' is a city in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. It was named for the Columbia River, on whose banks it sits with the river being named for the ship used when Captain Gray named the river in 1792. The population was 1,571 at the 2000 census.

Columbia City was founded in 1867 by Jacob and Joseph Caples, with aspirations of becoming the terminus for Ben Holladay's Willamette Valley railroad. As Portland, Oregon was the terminus of the west side line in 1870, Columbia City never achieved its expected growth.
Currently, Columbia City serves as a suburb of St. Helens, Oregon.

Columbia City is located at (45.891952, -122.813205).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 1.9 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (31.82%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,571 people, 595 households, and 448 families residing in the city. The population density was 808.8/km² (2,106.6/mi²). There were 640 housing units at an average density of 329.5/km² (858.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.61% White, 0.38% African American, 1.34% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.51% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.04% of the population.
There were 595 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.2% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% were non-families. 19.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 30.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 105.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $59,545, and the median income for a family was $62,596. Males had a median income of $46,964 versus $33,125 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,266. About 2.8% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.1% of those under age 18 and 3.7% of those age 65 or over.
