COLUMBIANA, OHIO
'Columbiana' is a city in Columbiana and Mahoning counties in Ohio, United States. The population was 5,635 at the 2000 census.
Columbiana is located at (40.885579, -80.688327).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 16.0 km² (6.2 mi²). 15.7 km² (6.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (2.10%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,635 people, 2,534 households, and 1,576 families residing in the city. The population density was 359.0/km² (930.4/mi²). There were 2,707 housing units at an average density of 172.5/km² (446.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.86% White, 0.11% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.32% of the population.
There were 2,534 households out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 34.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.76.
In the city the population was spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 25.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,560, and the median income for a family was $42,363. Males had a median income of $33,693 versus $21,648 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,727. About 4.9% of families and 6.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.8% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.
An early and probably very prominent settler was Joshua Dixon and his wife, Dinah. They settled in 1802 in Fairfield Township. Dixon was responsible for laying out the village of Columbiana on Aug. 21, 1805.
Columbiana had a railroad and three stores by 1831. The Elementary school in the city is also named in his honor.
Columbiana was the birthplace of Harvey S. Firestone who would later found the famous Firestone rubber company in Akron, Ohio. There is still a Firestone tractor-tire test facility a few miles northeast of the city, and many town facilities are named after him. Columbiana is also known for the Shaker Woods Festival, held annually in August, which features some of the best crafters and artisans in the country. Another major town event is the Columbiana Street Fair, a civic festival hosted by the local American Legion and held in early September.

'Columbiana Exempted Village Schools'
Columbiana Exempted Village Schools is a small district located in the quaint Ohio town of Columbiana. The school system has three buildings: Joshua Dixon Elementary, housing about 350 students in grades k-4; South Side Middle, with approximately 300 students in grades 5-8; and Columbiana High School, with 350 students in grades 9-12. The total number of students enrolled during the 2002-03 school year was 1,000.
Columbiana prides itself on a long tradition of excellence in education, with its students performing well on a variety of measures, including both standardized achievement tests and Ohio Proficiency Tests. About 50% of its graduates each year go on to college.
Columbiana's local high school sports teams play in the Inter-Tri County League, which includes schools from Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Columbiana Exempted Village Schools teams are known as the "Clippers," and their mascot is the Boeing 314.
In 2006, Columbiana Exempted Village Schools were named a School of Distinction by the Ohio Department of Education.
'Heartland Christian School'
Heartland Christian School is chartered by the Ohio Department of Education from preschool through 12th grade. Heartland is accredited by the ACSI, the Association of Christian Schools International, for a seven year period. Heartland opened its doors to area students on September 3, 1996 after being envisioned by several area families for many years.
