CONNEXIONS CARD
A 'Connexions Card' is a smart card for 16-19 year olds in England, created as part of the government-funded Connexions service in an attempt to reduce levels of truancy and unemployment. The card allows a young person to collect points for learning, work-based training and voluntary activities, usually by being awarded points for attending a course of study.
The program is run by Capita for the Department for Education and Skills. Concerns regarding success of the card exist, as some research has shown that it may not have made detectable impact on truancy or unemployment levels.
In early June 2006, members received letters indicating the closure of the scheme in February 2007. The reasons behind the closure have not yet officially been revealed, although it is believed the card became economically unsustainable due to the large costs involved in producing and supporting the card.
