COPTHORNE (HUNDRED)
'Copthorne' was a hundred in what is now Surrey, England. It includes the following places: Ashtead , Burgh, Cuddington, Epsom, Ewell, Fetcham, Headley, Leatherhead, Mickleham, Pachevesham (near Leatherhead), Tadworth, Thorncroft and Walton-on-the-Hill.[1]
However, actually in the Doomsday book, the towns of Ashtead, Fetcham and Mickleham were included in the Wallington (hundred) by mistake. They are part of the Copthorne hundred.[2]
Copthorne appears in Domesday Book as ''Copededorne''. Copthorne was a hundred (these are not marked on the Surrey Domesday map, which shows only Domesday manors), an administrative area, where local leaders met about once a month. [3]
