'Corozal District' is the northernmost
district of the nation of
Belize.
Population (2000): 33,335. District capital:
Corozal Town.

Ambergris Caye may geographically be closest to Corozal District, it is actually a part of
Belize District.
The
Pre-Columbian Maya ruins are found in Corozal at
Santa Rita near Corazal Town, at Louisville, and at
Cerros.
Importance
Corozal has long been the home of the sugar industry in Belize and the fortunes of its people have risen and fallen with the cane stalks. Other than sugar production and basic agriculture, Corozalenos have little in the way of development to speak of.
