'Costain Group plc' is a British construction and civil engineering company headquartered in Maidenhead. It was founded in Liverpool in 1865 and was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1933. It has operated in the Middle East since 1935, and in central and southern Africa since 1947. It was part of the original Channel Tunnel consortium and is involved in Private Finance Initiative projects. Turnover for the year to 31 December 2006 was £886.3 million and loss before tax was £61.7m.
Projects undertaken by or involving the Company have included the Dolphin Square apartments in London completed in 1937, a section of the Trans-Iranian Railway completed in 1939, Dubai International Airport completed in 1960, the Thames Barrier completed in 1984, the Channel Tunnel completed in 1994, the Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong completed in 1997 and the Cardiff Bay Barrage completed in 1999.
