'Current Issues & Events', (commonly referred to as 'Current Events'), is a test administered at UIL academic competitions. The test consists of forty multiple choice questions and an essay. Contestants are given one hour to complete the test.
The multiple choice section consists of forty questions about events that have occurred during the school year. The questions come from events occurring from September 1st of the current school year until one month prior to the competition for District and Regional competition tests. Questions for the State competition test come from events occurring between September 1st and two weeks prior to the State competition. Contestants are given one point for each question answered correctly, with no points being deducted for incorrect answers.
A prompt (which usually includes a quote or two) follows the multiple choice section. The prompt identifies an issue which has arisen. The contestant must write an informative essay that explains the issue and answers any questions in the prompt.
Each contestant is required to write the essay of the Current Issues and Events test. Those who fail to write the essay are immediately disqualified. Those who do write the essay are judged based on 4 criteria (maximum points awarded for each criteria in parentheses):
★ Showing a basic understanding of the topic (5)
★ Analyzing and/or interpreting the topic (2)
★ Providing concrete details and/or apt quotations (2)
★ Using proper sentence structure and grammar (1)
In addition, points may be deducted from the essay if it is sloppily written, poorly proofread, poorly worded, and if it editorializes. Each offense yields a maximum deduction of one-half of a point, with the exception of the essay being poorly worded, which yields a maximum deduction of one point. The maximum score any contestant may receive on the essay is 10 points.
Contestants will only have their essay judged if they have one of the top eight highest scores on the multiple choice section.
Current Issues & Events is both an individual and team event.
The individual score is calculated by adding the total number of multiple choice questions answered correctly and the score of the essay together. Places are awarded in descending order of score. The maximum individual score one may receive is 50. At the state academic meet, this has happened only one time.
The team score is calculated by adding the total number of multiple choice questions answered correctly by the top three members of each school. That is, the multiple choice scores of the three highest multiple choice scoring members of each school are added together.
The three highest-scoring individuals and the highest-scoring team at the District competition advance to the Regional competition, and the three highest-scoring individuals and the highest-scoring team at the Regional competition advance to the State competition.
