DAN BACKS

'Dan Backs' is a politician and current member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
Backs was educated at St. Francis High School in Calgary, Alberta and studied at the University of Alberta and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
Backs was a long time member of the Alberta Liberal Party, and had done extensive work for the party as a volunteer for many years prior to seeking public office.
Backs was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the 2004 Alberta general election for the first time as a Alberta Liberal Party MLA for the provincial electoral district of Edmonton Manning. He defeated incumbent Tony Vandermeer from the Progressive Conservatives.
Backs was removed from the Liberal caucus in 2006, and forced to sit as an independent. No specific reason was given for his removal, with the official party statement saying he was removed as "teamwork is key to being an effective Opposition." Backs currently sits as an Independent Liberal. Prior to being removed from caucus Backs had won his nomination to run again for the Liberal party. Liberal leader Kevin Taft had stated his nomination was void, and a new candidate would be selected. As of May 2007 he is reportedly planning to seek the Progressive Conservative nomination in the next election.
