DAN KIMBALL

Dan Kimball

'Dan Kimball' is a pastor, author and known to be part of the Emerging Church movement. Kimball uses the phrases "Vintage Faith" and "Vintage Christianity" for how he expresses his perspective of going back to "vintage" values of the original Christian church and teachings of Jesus - yet at the same time moving forward to what it means to be church in a very different culture today.
Dan Kimball is one of the pastors at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, California. Vintage Faith Church is a church plant of Santa Cruz Bible Church that began in 2004. His church vision statement seen on their website states that they desire to be a "''worshiping community of missional theologians''".
Vintage Faith Church, along with Kimball's writings are often focused on designing worship services which bring in the usage of art, prayer stations and other creative and artistic forms of worship in addition to the preaching and the singing.
Kimball is known as one of the more theologically conservative voices in the emerging church discussion. He is a graduate of Multnomah Biblical Seminary and Western Seminary. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree at George Fox Evangelical Seminary.

Defining the "Emerging Church"

Some people have raised concerns about the Emerging Church and the Emergent Church movement. The Emerging Church is a broad movement of Christians from all types of denominations ranging from Southern Baptist to Lutheran to non-denominational, so it not easy to have a specific definition. Because there is a very wide theological variety within it, some feel there is a distinction between "emerging" and "emergent". Those who are part of broader "Emerging Church" are generally evangelical and theologically conservative, but aggressive in evangelism and methodology for spreading the gospel. Lately, there has risen some stereotypes painted of the emerging church by some critics. Dan Kimball responded to these stereotypes in these two articles:
Core Doctrines and The Emerging Church
Please Don't Stereotype The Emerging Church
These concerns have also been addressed by many others in various books, blogs and web sites.
The concerns raised are that anything "emerging" or "emergent" is taking away from worshiping God, and focusing on getting attendance up by "sugar-coating" The Bible, and adding mysticism and rituals that are more closely related to pagan worship than The Holy Trinity. [1][2][3][4][5][6]
