DANISH 1ST DIVISION

The '1st Division' (officially named the 'Viasat Sport Division' after main sponsor Viasat) has been the name of the second highest football league in Denmark since 1991. Initially founded as the highest level of football in Denmark in 1946, the 1st Division became the second tier of Danish football when the Danish Superliga was formed in 1991.
The top ranking teams each year win promotion to the Superliga, while the bottom finishers get relegated to the Danish 2nd Divisions.

There has been two or more levels of football in Denmark since 1930, when the ''Promotion Series'' became the second level of Danish football, beneath the Danish ''Championship League'', which determined the winners of the Danish football championship. The second level of Danish football was renamed the ''2nd series'' in 1937, but had to be abandoned during the German occupation of Denmark in the Second World War.
After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Danish championship was contested through the newly formed 1st Division, while the second level of Danish football was named the ''2nd Division''. The 2nd Division was the second highest Danish league from 1946 to 1990, when the Superliga was founded as the highest level, and the second tier was renamed the ''1st division''. From 1992 to 1995, the six top teams of the first half of the 1st Division season went through to the ''Qualification League'', where they competed with the two lowest ranking Superliga clubs for promotion to the subsequent Superliga season.
In 1996, the 1st Division had its first name sponsor, as the league received the official name "Faxe Kondi Divisionen" after main sponsor Faxe Brewery. The sponsor deal ended in 2001, but from 2004 it was named "Viasat Sport Divisionen".
