History
Dawn is the daughter of Rosie Miller and Mike Swann. Her father deserted the family when she was very young, but she never gave up hope that she might meet him someday. Dawn left her family at the age of 16, so that she could travel. In France, she met Mike and introduced him to her brother (and Mike's son) Mickey. She returned to Walford with Mickey and conned the residents into paying for her to have breast implants by claiming that she needed the money for an operation for a medical condition.
Dawn has on many occasions expressed aversion at being referred to as Dawn Miller, most probably a result of her dislike for step-father Keith - the father of her youngest siblings Darren and Demi.
Despite both Jake Moon and Deano Wicks attempting to flirt with her, Dawn also had her eye on the Square's new doctor, Oliver Cousins, for a while.
Whilst looking for perfume she thought her half brother Darren had taken, Dawn came across some money. She confronted Darren about this, and he confessed he had found it in a bin and stolen it, later finding out that it belonged to Jake Moon. Darren was sharing it with twin sister Demi, and Dawn insisted they split the money three ways, otherwise she would tell Rosie. Dawn used the money to print up T-shirts for Gus Smith's campaign to free his dog, Wellard, which had been impounded for biting Ian Beale.
When Dawn's grandmother Nora Swann was ill, Dawn invited her father Mike to stay with the family for a while, and he slept on the sofa where Darren had hidden the money. Mike discovered the money and stole it from them, suggesting to Keith that he buy a new sofa and they put the old one on the bonfire. Keith did so and Dawn, Darren and Demi, thinking the money was still inside, were horrified to discover the sofa on the bonfire.
After her grandmother died, her father returned, and got Dawn involved in a scam to get Nora's money. Nora had left £5000 to Rosie, but Mike persuaded Dawn to pose as Rosie to get the money from Nora's carer, Kitty. Mike had told Dawn that he was going to start a new life in Spain for himself and Rosie, but in reality he had only booked a one-way ticket to Spain for himself. Dawn, Rosie and Mickey found out at the last minute, and Rosie gave the money to Mike on the condition that he never come back.
Dawn made contact with a modelling agency, but they turned her down because she was too tall and too old. Dawn thought her breast implants would increase her chances but the modelling agent said they were looking for something more natural.
Dawn's hopes were raised when Kevin Wicks offered her a job as a model but all he wanted her to do was hand out leaflets. His daughter Carly saw Dawn throw the leaflets in the bin, and the pair ended up fighting, with Carly hitting Dawn. They have since made up and become friends.
Dawn and Rob
Dawn was roped into one of Ian Beale's schemes, posing as his wife Jane in order to impress one of Ian's business associates from the WCCT committee. Ian paid her a large sum and bought her a silver bracelet for her trouble.
Dawn then started dating a member of the WCCT, Rob Minter, but later discovered that he was married to the new Walford GP, May Wright, with whom Dawn had become friends, although the two were separated when Dawn started dating him.
Dawn was pregnant by Rob and although she originally agreed to sell the baby to May for £19,000, she continuously asked for more money and gifts.
Eventually, Dawn stopped trying to use the pregnancy to earn money and make a mockery of May, deciding instead to try to use it to win Rob back. After many failed attempts to shut May out and get close to Rob again, Dawn arranged an appointment at the clinic for an abortion. Rob arrived at the last minute and told her she was the one he wanted to be with and said he would leave May "when the time was right". Despite initially not believing him and seeming to decide to go through with the abortion, she left the clinic and went outside to Rob's car, telling him that he had better be telling the truth.
Dawn then re-ignited the affair with Rob and kept pressurising him to leave May. However, Rob kept on avoiding the situation, saying that they had to wait. It was later revealed May had known about the new affair from its inception and that she was in fact the one who had suggested it so that Dawn would keep the baby. Dawn was unaware of this. Eventually, Rob's guilt got the better of him and he confessed his deception, causing Dawn to yet again try for an abortion but she was refused one due to being too far on in her pregnancy. Her fury and upset caused her to get heavily drunk at the flat Rob and May rented for her, leaving a bath running. Garry Hobbs and Carly Wicks found her in time and she got rushed off to the hospital, where she was informed that she and the baby were fine. Rob came to the hospital and tried to tell Dawn she was the one he wanted but she sent him away in disgust. When Dawn was let out of the hospital, she was surprised when Rob suddenly left May without a second thought and announced he was going to live with Dawn, leaving her delighted and May furious.
Dawn's new beginning with Rob did not turn out to be easy however due to May's scheming ways. After throwing them both out the new flat due to her being the one that was paying for it, she got Rob suspended from his work by telling his employers that he has fraudulently opened a credit card acount under the name of Jane Beale, the name Dawn used when impersonating Ian's wife. Eventually Rob lost his job permanently and had his car taken away from him, leaving them both in financial ruin and forced to move into Number 27 with Keith. Rob began to try and get a divorce from May and despite her stalling she eventually signed the divorce papers and brought them very close to an official divorce. However, when the divorce was complete Rob's old feelings for May came rushing back to him and he had sex with her on the desk at the surgery.
When she discovered a pendant with a picture of Rob and Dawn inside Rob's jacket, Dawn went to the surgery to confront May about constantly pestering Rob, only for her to reveal that they slept together and Dawn was stunned when Rob did not deny it. She ended their relationship yet again and did not relent until Rob proposed to her right in front of May and she accepted. Rob then made plans for them both to go and live with his parents until they could find a house of their own which she eventually agreed to. After an emotional send off inside The Vic the couple departed for Rob's parents only to find it empty. Rob gave Dawn the keys to get inside and when she went inside May emerged from one the rooms, and Rob locked the door behind them. Dawn was later seen handcuffed to a bedpost with May threatening to perform a Ceasarean section on her.
Dawn later became free of the handcuffs and escaped from the house and into May's car.
She returned to Walford, went to Gary and told him everything. She refused to tell Keith or Mickey what happened over the weekend. Dawn became extremely frightened of being left alone and kept looking out the window for Rob and May. She was alone in the house when Rob appeared through the back door. Dawn pulled a knife on him before Mickey and Keith returned. Dawn told them what happened over the weekend but still refused to go to the police. Frustrated, she left the house and informed Mickey by phone that she was going to Rosie's. She told Mickey to do whatever they want with Rob.
Unfortunately, the tube she was on broke down and then her waters broke. Dawn got some moral support from some of the tube passengers, with one of them calling an ambulance for her. At the hospital, she told the nurses not to let Rob anywhere near her. Carly, Mickey, Keith and Gary got to the hospital and so did Rob who was escorted away by security. Dawn gave birth to a baby girl, Summer on 21 June with Carly by her side. Rob and May were anxiously waiting outside the hospital for news of the birth before May told Rob she wanted to apologise to Dawn for everything that had happened. May entered Dawn's room while she was asleep, put down a card, picked up Baby Summer said "You're all mine" and headed for the door just as Dawn awoke. She told May to "Put her down", and insisted May hand Summer over to her. May did, and Dawn called for the nurse but May quickly ran out.
The next day Dawn returned home. Rob arrived at the house, promising Dawn that he loved her and that he made a mistake. He then proposed to her for a second time. Dawn led Rob to believe that she still loved him, but then she punched him in the face and sent him packing.
A short while afterwards May arrived, asking if she could say a final farewell to baby Summer. Dawn agreed but very cunningly phoned the police (although unbeknown to May). Dawn delayed May and allowed May to see Summer. Eventually they heard a police siren which pulled up outside 27 Albert Square. May said "Very clever" and allowed the police to take her away. May was arrested on suspicion of kidnap. May was then taken away and this was the last time she was seen.
Motherhood
Since Dawn's horrible ordeal with May and Rob, Dawn doubted her motherhood skills. She was a little forgetful with the baby's things and still dreaded nappy-changing. Gary took her to on a trip to Brighton where they shared a hotel room, and Dawn finally started getting accustomed to being a mother.
