Controversy

In May 2002, 12 students super-glued stolen beehives within the school and also glued a large number of classroom and building doors shut. The school prank resulted in the release of a swarm of 80,000 bees. The students were suspended and later sentenced to perform community service. This prank was also the first to air on MTV's show "High School Stories: Scandals, Pranks & Controversies" receiving an hour long special.[1]

DeLand High School has been an International Baccalaureate high school since the 1970's. The program is a rigorous academic program that prepares its students for college with a critical workload and deep thinking.

Engineering Academy

DeLand High School hosts an Engineering Program where students take specific classes to train them in the engineering field.

Construction Academy

DeLand High School is building a brand new facilty for the Construction Academy that is set to open for the 2008 school year. Students will be able to learn the concepts of construction so they can go into the work field.

Athletics

Weightlifting

In 2005 the Bulldogs won a state championship in weightlifting for the 11th time.

Baseball

In 1951 the Bulldogs baseball team attended the state championship. The Bulldogs became state champions in 1961. In 2006 and 2007 the team made it into the state's final four championship. In 2007 they were state runner-up and beat two-time state champion Flanagan/Pembroke Pines.

Bowling

The girls bowling team won the State Championship in 2005 and have not been defeated since.

Varsity Football

The 2006 season saw the Bulldogs as district champions in varsity football. For the last 14 years, they have also won the Battle Of The Bones against district rival Deltona High School. In 2006 they won the battle 56-0.

Freshman Football

In 2005 the Freshman Bulldogs went undefeated, going 6-0 and beating their opponents an average of 30-7.
In the 2006 season the Freshman Bulldogs again went undefeated, going 8-0.

Varsity Basketball

The varisty basketball team has a good track record and in the 2006-2007 school year they beat many intimidating opponents such as Deltona, Mainland, Lake Mary, West Orange,and University. The head coach is Coach Zeoli.

Academic Team

In 2007, the academic team truimphed over Spruce Creek's honored academic team and became district champions. They regularly compete in regional competitions.

Band

DeLand's band has gained recognition over the last 4 years visiting the Georgia Peach Bowl and the Florida Bandmasters Association State Concert Festival three times, twice which they received the highest possible ratings. In the 2007-08 school year, the band returned to the State Concert Festival, receiving superior ratings from all judges. A trip to Washington, D.C. is planned for next year.

★ Marc "Tank" Dixon, Class of 2004 Radio Personality/DJ by the name of DJ Nailz in Daytona Beach, Public Addess Announcer for Bethune-Cookman University's Basketball Programs and Volleyball Program.

★ Sara McLarty, professional triathlete, 15-time NCAA American swimming at the University of Florida (class of 2000). [3]

★ Tra Thomas, NFL offensive lineman

★ Joline "Jo Jo" Philpot, Class of 1982 Radio Personality in Orlando on Star 94.5 FM, WCFB.

★ Luke Scott, Houston Astros outfielder

★ Lisa Davies, former fashion plate, she now models for campaigns such as Emporio Armani. [4]

★ Michael Main, Texas Rangers

★ Nancy Benoit, former professional wrestler/manager/valet known by her ring names Woman and Fallen Angel. Slain wife of wrestler a Deland High School graduate Cal Massey and Jeff Wilen She was murdered by her husband Chris Benoit in June 2007.

Mu Alpha Theta

Deland high school is one of two schools in Volusia County that offers Mu Alpha Theta math honors society. Members regularly participate in the regional competitions.
