'Deal' is a Borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA. As of the 2000 Census, the borough population was 1,070.
The Borough of Deal was incorporated as a borough on March 7, 1898, by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature, from portions of Ocean Township.[1]
Deal boasts a significant population of Orthodox Sephardic Jews, mainly of Syrian extraction. In the 2000 Census, 16.4% of Deal residents identified as being of Syrian heritage, the greatest percentage of Syrian Americans in any municipality in the country.[2] Deal's population swells to over 6,000 during the summer, many of them Syrian Jews.[3]

Deal is located at (40.247866, -73.997328).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (6.20%) is water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 1,070 people, 434 households, and 289 families residing in the borough. The population density was 338.6/km² (880.5/mi²). There were 953 housing units at an average density of 301.6/km² (784.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 94.39% White, 1.21% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 2.71% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.05% of the population.
There were 434 households out of which 19.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough the population was spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 26.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $58,472, and the median income for a family was $65,313. Males had a median income of $57,857 versus $27,813 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $38,510. About 7.8% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.0% of those under age 18 and 6.6% of those age 65 or over.

Local government

The Borough of Deal has been governed by a three-member commission under the Walsh Act since 1912.[4]
The Deal Borough Commission consists of Mayor Harry I. Franco, Commissioner Dorothy O'Donnell and Commissioner Dennis Dayan.
Federal, state and county representation

Deal is in the Sixth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 11th Legislative District.[5]

Education


The Deal School serves students in Kindergarten through eighth grade.
For grades 9-12, students attend Asbury Park High School in neighboring Asbury Park as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Asbury Park Public Schools.[6]
