History
Introduced to Dawn Raid Entertainment through a relative in the group K.A.O.S., the group showed an impressive talent from the beginning. Dawn Raid Entertainment put the group straight in the studio, resulting in the group's debut on the underground album of 2001 '' (which was nominated for best Hip Hop album of 2001 at the 95bFM Music Awards). Their breakthrough underground hit ''"Elimination"'' caused such a stir that the Deceptikonz were nominated for Best New Group at the 2001 95bFM Music Awards without officially releasing a single.
Before joining the Deceptikonz, Mareko worked in a computer repair store reattaching keys to Dell laptops. He was fired after looking at the contents of a customer's harddrive. But luck was on his side when he was interested in some of the downloaded hip hop samples and he got in touch with the customer, Alphrisk.Although this is merely a rumour, it is held by many to be true.
The Deceptikonz name was strengthened even further after Mareko was crowned 'Best MC in New Zealand' after winning the National Battle for Supremacy contest.
The Deceptikonz debut release was initially slated as the 6 track ''Verbal Abuse EP''. however a decision was made to upgrade the EP to the full length (13 track) album ''Elimination''.
On ''"Elimination"'', Mareko passes production duties to a few of New Zealand's best producers, including P-Money and John Chong-Nee of gold selling group AKA Brown.
The first single, ''Fallen Angels'', featuring DJ P-Money was followed by ''More Than Meets The Eye'' (much like their own name, a take on the Transformers motto) was produced by Chong-Nee, are examples of the group's diversity. ''"Fallen Angels"'' features members of the Auckland City Choir, while the group change pace with the funk infested anthem; ''More Than Meets The Eye''. ''Broken Home'', a solo song by group member Savage is about his biological father and shows a raw, personal side to the album, while ''U Want Beef'' is a clear notice to anyone contesting their crowns as the best MCs in New Zealand.
