'Deering' is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA. The population was 1,875 at the 2000 census.

History


Incorporated in 1774, Deering takes its name from Frances Deering Wentworth, the wife of colonial governor John Wentworth. The town had 928 residents when the first census was taken in 1790.

Notable Inhabitants



Ebenezer Locke (1734-1816) of Woburn, Massachusetts, is locally reputed to have fired the famous shot heard 'round the world, the first shot fired by an American at the Battle of Lexington. Locke spent his later years in Deering and is buried there.

★ Folk singer Tom Rush lived in Deering from 1971 to 1990. His former Deering estate is now the Tom Rush Forest.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 81.4 km² (31.4 mi²). 79.8 km² (30.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water, comprising 2.04% of the town. The highest point in Deering is ''Clark Summit'' (1,570 feet / 479 meters above sea level). Deering lies fully within the Merrimack River watershed. Demographics


As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,875 people, 713 households, and 518 families residing in the town. The population density was 23.5/km² (60.9/mi²). There were 933 housing units at an average density of 11.7/km² (30.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.45% White, 0.27% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.07% of the population.
There were 713 households out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% were non-families. 22.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 102.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $48,750, and the median income for a family was $53,889. Males had a median income of $35,813 versus $26,144 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,856. About 1.2% of families and 4.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.9% of those under age 18 and 5.0% of those age 65 or over.
