"Dexter's Rival" is the first part of the third episode of the first season of Dexter's Laboratory. This short also marks Mandark's first appearance.
Dexter is really happy, as it is the first day of school. He takes his bath and prepares his best clothes for his special day. Always happy, he arrives at school with a great smile. He arrives in class, ready to answer Mr. Luzinsky. But someone else answers before him: A black face not known yet, until Mr. Luzinsky presents him. So the new student, whose last name is Astronomonov, is presented to the class, and says he prefers to be named Mandark. When he says this name, thunder rages. When Mandark goes back to his place, he stops to scorn Dexter. The director then announces many tests by the intercom. Mandark gets higher notes than Dexter in every test.
Dexter runs away, scared. Later, at his locker, Mandark goes to see Dexter to tell him he learned Dexter had a laboratory. So Dexter shows him his lab, which Mandark is bored of. Mandark shows his own lab, which is bigger and greater. Mandark gives Dexter two choices: He to shut down his lab to complete Mandark's lab power or he suffer in Mandark's lab. Dexter has no else choice than to shut down his lab.
The next day, he notices everyone prefers Mandark than him. Dee Dee arrives and say Hi to Dexter, and Mandark hears it. He falls in love with Dee Dee, and asks Dexter who she is. When he learns her name, he asks Dexter how he could get her love. Dexter asks himself and comes up with a plan. He makes a line of candies starting from Dee Dee's bedroom, and finishing at Mandark's home front door. Dexter knocks at Dee Dee's door, she comes out and follows the candy line, and arrives at Mandark's home. Mandark presents himself to her, and invites her in his lab. He starts dancing on music, and Dee Dee, too, starts dancing, starting to wreck his lab. Mandark calls his robots, which Dee Dee defeats by dancing.
Dexter looks at the scene by a computer screen, and is happy to finally destroy Mandark's lab.
