(Redirected from Dick Brave and the Backbeats)
'Sascha Schmitz' (born
January 5,
1972 in
Soest,
North Rhine-Westphalia), better known as 'Sasha', is a
German singer and songwriter. From
2003 until
2005 he performed under his alter ego 'Dick Brave'.
Biography
His musical career started when he became lead singer of a school band called ''Junkfood''. The group recorded several demotapes together, but attracted no label interest and the band soon split. At the same time the producers of the
German rapper Der Wolf engaged him as background singer for the hit single "Gibt's Doch Gar Nicht", a success improved upon by his first official appearance, on "Wannabe Your Lover", a top 10 collaboration with newcomer Young Deenay.
In
1998 Sasha abandoned his studies of
German and
Sports due to his increasing interest in becoming a professional singer. He signed a contract with
Warner Music and teamed up once again with Deenay to release another duet, "I'm Still Waitin'", the lead single off his debut album ''Dedicated to ... ''. Released in fall
1998, the album peaked at number 4 on the German album chart and was eventually certified
Platinum. With "If You Believe", "We Can Leave the World" and "I Feel Lonely" the album spawned three further Top 10 hits.
In
2000 and
2001 Sasha followed up with the albums ''... You'' and ''Surfin' on a Backbeat''. The longplayers exceeded the success of his debut, whereas the singles became bigger hits via airplay than through their sales. At the same time the singer was acknowledged with several awards, including a Bambi and an
ECHO for "Best Newcomer".
In
2003 Sasha started performing as lead singer of a
rockabilly band called ''Dick Brave & The Backbeats''. Originally conceived as a humorous lark, their success encouraged the group to record a whole album together, and "Dick This!" eventually became the singer's first number 1 record. It also featured a successful remake of
1961's "
Take Good Care of My Baby", originally written by
Carole King and
Gerry Goffin and performed by
Bobby Vee. In November
2004 the project was discontinued. However, alias Dick Brave's continual presence had earned Sasha an older audience for the first time.
In March
2006 Sasha returned with his latest album ''Open Water'', which was followed up by his ''Greatest Hits'' album in late
2006.
On
July 7,
2007, he performed at the
German leg of
Live Earth in
Hamburg.
