The 'Challenge of Barletta' (Italian: ''la Disfida di Barletta'', literally "the response") was a battle near Barletta, Italy that occurred on February 13, 1503. The battle was prompted by an insult said by the Frenchman Charles de la Motte. It happened on the plains between Corato and Andria. It was a chivalrous tournament between 13 Italian and 13 French knights on horseback. The Italian knights won the battle, and the French then left the area. Barletta has since acquired the nickname "''La Città della Disfida''", as a result.
