DIVISION OF CALARE

The 'Division of Calare' is an Australian Electoral Division in New South Wales. The division was first contested at the 1906 election (it was created to replace the abolished Division of Canobolas) and is named for the Aboriginal name for the Lachlan River, part of which was in the Division on its original boundaries. (The name should be pronounced Kal-''ah''-ree, but the pronunciation Kul-''air'' is established.) Calare was originally based on Forbes, Orange and Parkes, but subsequent boundary changes have moved it eastwards and it now takes in Bathurst, Lithgow and Orange. On these boundaries it is a marginal seat between the Australian Labor Party (which held it 1983-96) and the National Party, but it has been held by an independent, Peter Andren, since 1996. Andren seems to be unbeatable in the seat: once he retires it will probably revert to its marginal status.
Peter Andren has announced he will not seek another term and had withdrawn from his bid to win a Senate seat due to his diagnosis of cancer. Declared candidates for Calare in the 2007 election are the current member for the Division of Parkes, John Cobb, and former Telstra manager Gavin Priestley. The Labor candidate is Michael Allen a barrister from Orange, in central western New South Wales.
